“I think that it’s one of our bigger goals. Whether it’s this year or next, or 2022, I don’t know. But I definitely think we’ll see Jon fight at light heavyweight again, for sure, that’s a belt he’s held for a decade.” Gibson told MMA Fighting’s Euro bash podcast.

Jones‘ walk around weight is north of 230 lbs. His frame should not be a problem for him as Jones is one of the bigger light heavyweights. Having an 84½ reach should also favor him. There are ample of opportunities for Jones at heavyweight. He can fight Stipe in a champion vs champion match, a trilogy with Daniel Cormier or maybe a super fight with Francis Nnganou.

Jones has a real shot at conquering two divisions and defending both fighters for a very long time. Since he is only 32 years old, switching weight classes frequently shouldn’t be a problem for him. It will be a totally different Jon Jones since he won’t have to cut the weight and depreciate his body. We might even get to see more knockouts by Jon Jones.

A move to heavyweight might look like the best option in theory. But, if all aspects are taken into consideration, there are some dangers Jones might face. Size discrepancy can be one of them. Many heavyweights are above 265 lbs and usually cut down to heavyweight. Power can also be a factor, Jon Jones can get away with minor errors in the light heavyweight division but a tiny mistake in the heavyweight division can be costly.

However, Jones should not look past Dominick Reyes. Reyes is an upcoming challenger with devastating knockout power. He boasts a perfect MMA record of 12 wins with no losses. If Jon Jones can dominate Reyes, it is possible that his next fight might be at heavyweight.
