Last December, Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington were part of an epic match for the UFC welterweight championship. It was a high pace battle in which both fighters were not willing to back down. Although it was a back and forth battle, ultimately, Usman was able to stop Covington in the fifth round by strikes.

However, Covington was not happy about the stoppage. He believed that he had more left in the tank and the referee, Marc Goddard took away his opportunity. Since then, Covington has been vocal about the controversial ending.

Recently, the welterweight champion came out and spoke about the stoppage.

“You can say it’s controversial but you have to see the referee just saw you take all those big shots in a row,” Usman said. “He has to be able to step in to protect you from yourself so you can live to fight another day.”

Kamaru Usman imagined a different finish for the Colby Covington Fight

Usman may not be known as the hardest hitter in the division, but he is strong and mostly outwrestles his opponents throughout the match. However, neither fighter attempted any takedowns in their fight. It was mainly a striking battle between the two.

Usman said that he wanted to brutally knock out Colby Covington in their fight.

“The finish, all I could picture in my head was Francis Ngannou-Alistair Overeem finish or Dan Henderson-Michael Bisping,” Usman continued. “That was all I had in my mind, that I wanted to cap that fight off with but I’ll take the finish anyway that I can get it.”

Although it’s not on paper, Kamaru Usman will probably face Jorge Masvidal in July during International Fight Week. Masvidal is coming off impressive victories over Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz.

Usman may be fighting Masvidal next but he has shown interest in fighting Colby once again in the future. He said, “I hope so…Because that was a fun fight. Not just myself but I think the media, the fans, everybody believed that was a fun fight.”

If Covington and Usman collide once again in the future, do you think that the fight will go any different from the first one?
