30th December marks the fourth year anniversary of the fight between Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes. MMA fans will, of course, be familiar with the anticipation that was a part of the build-up to the fight and the aftermath of it as well. The fight ended in a first-round KO for Nunes, sealing her as one of the greatest, if not the greatest women’s MMA athletes of all time.

Although to the majority, the debate about who’s the better fighter between the two might be a closed deal, Cris Cyborg had an interesting statement to make on it. In a post by popular MMA news outlet ‘BJPenn.com’, the current Bellator Women’s Featherweight Champion responded by claiming to own a much more impressive record since the two last fought. It opens up an interesting angle into who holds the better record between the two, keeping in mind the quality of opponents they have faced.

Even though it has been four years since the fight between Cyborg and Amanda Nunes went down, a video clip posted by BJPenn.com on Twitter took fans down the memory lane. The clip covering the fight and the eventual KO by Nunes led to Cyborg responding with her own statement. “Since this fight I’ve gone 6-0 in MMA and 2-0 in boxing while she’s gone 5-1,” tweeted Cyborg.

This might be a different take than what fans are used to as most of them consider Nunes to have sealed the debate of who’s the better fighter with her convincing finish over Cyborg.

Cyborg, who’s the current Bellator Featherweight champion, has defended her title multiple times after her move to the promotion. As the only fighter, male or female, to have held four titles under different promotions, she believes she still has the ability to beat Nunes if they were to meet once again. Her claim that “sometimes to be your best you need to lose” is descriptive of her mentality and character.

Will the two women’s MMA great collide again?

Although circumstances might not make a rematch between the two easily feasible, it’s not entirely impossible. Cyborg made it clear that she might be open to a rematch with the hashtag #CyborgVsNunes2 in her tweet. Will it ever take place? That’s an entirely different discussion considering her relationship with UFC and Dana White. The UFC president has shared an on-and-off relationship with Cyborg and the idea of the rematch might not be as lucrative as it was the first time.

Whatever unfolds in the future, the 37-year-old Bellator fighter still has the belief that she is the best women’s fighter of the generation. A fight with Nunes will give her the opportunity to solidify herself among the best and silence her doubters. Will Nunes or the UFC agree to make the fight? That’s a different scenario altogether.

Although Cyborg holds a better record of staying undefeated, even going 2-0 in her boxing career, Nunes has faced considerably tougher opponents in the likes of Holly Holm and Julianna Pena. Her last fight was a win against Pena to avenge her loss the first time they met.

Cyborg might relish the idea of a rematch, but till then, the discussion as to who is a better fighter is up to the fans to decide. Nonetheless, the former UFC women’s featherweight champion considers herself at par with her fellow Brazilian counterpart, which cannot really be argued with considering her credentials.
