Multiple martial artists had their careers cut short due to injuries and illnesses. A number of UFC fighters like Anthony ‘The Rumble’ Johnson have also bid goodbye to the earth owing to severe diseases. In lieu of this, the fans are now shooting up questions about ‘King’s’ visibly reduced stature on various online platforms. Well, Ryan couldn’t stay quiet for long after knowing numerous concerns coming his way from the fans. Here’s what he had to say!

Gordon Ryan chose to answer the questions about his health online

Ryan contracted a severe case of strep throat after a trip to Abu Dhabi in early 2023. Reports say that he was hospitalized and given antibiotics, but his condition did not improve. Adding to his troubles, ‘King’ also developed an ear infection that required surgery. However, matters further escalated when doctors found that he had a fungal growth in his small intestine and a bacterial imbalance in his stomach, which caused him severe pain and discomfort.

These health issues had developed from a previous staph infection and ulcer that he had suffered from in 2022. Ryan also disclosed all of this himself through one of his Instagram posts on 22 May this year. The caption to his Instagram post also revealed the multiple physical issues that he was going through. It also read, “I’m headed into surgery today for a tonsillectomy and to fix my severely deviated septum”

It’s quite apparent that most fans will be currently praying for his healthy recovery. However, the Instagram post from ‘King’ may have disheartened a number of fans who wanted to see him back in action soon.

Gordon Ryan wasn’t sure but he eventually returned to competition

The initial line of the caption to Ryan’s post revealed, “I’m not sure when I’ll be competing again”. Well, Ryan was going through multiple physical issues at the time. Also, none of them can be called minor ones. One of his previous staph infections resulted in serious trouble for him. Hence, the proper treatment of his current disease was an urgent necessity.

My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
