Ben Askren Has a ‘Hard Time Believing’ That Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr. Will Hit the Mammoth Numbers

Former UFC welterweight fighter Ben Askren took to Twitter and chimed in on the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr bout. The aforementioned heavyweight exhibition match will see the two icons duke it out at the Staples Center. There’s plenty of hype surrounding the bout, especially when considering that Mike Tyson is returning to the ring after 15 years.

Mike Tyson last fought back in 2005 and at the age of 54, very few could have predicted that he would make his return. Additionally, Roy Jones Jr. has a massive fan base and the fact that he competed as recently as 2018 has boosted his relevance. However, Ben Askren has taken exception to a claim made by Tyson on his social media.

Chiefly, ‘Iron’ Mike took to Twitter and shared an image grab that claimed that his bout on Saturday was the biggest of the decade. While the hype is certainly pulsing through the combat sports world, the aforementioned claim may be a stretch.

Funky‘ Ben Askren certainly believed so, and he was quick to share his sentiments.

Ben Askren has never been one to shy away from sharing his candid views, even when it comes to challenging a claim made by Tyson. Although Tyson vs Jones Jr has all the makings of an all-time spectacle, Askren believes that isn’t enough to draw up sales. In all fairness, to be touted as the biggest fight of the last decade is a rather astronomical claim. Moreover, this projection has come through early pre-fight sales.

Fans are skeptical as to how both the aging legends will perform after several years away from active competition. Inactivity can be disastrous for any fighter. Given Tyson and Jones Jr’s age, the concerns will be magnified. However, the nostalgia factor of the bout has certainly made it the talk of the town as of late.

Not to mention, both the aforementioned did not fight each other in their primes. Although the fight has come in several years after the ideal period, there’s certainly fan interest as it is a fresh match. It will be interesting to see how the box office numbers stack up against some of the biggest bouts put forth in the last decade.
