When a fighter like Conor McGregor fought the WBC champion Floyd Mayweather back in 2017, the world was thrilled to see two of the best athletes from different disciplines of combat sports, step into the boxing ring and throw hands. This was so fascinating and sold so many PPVs that now, ‘super fights’ or ‘crossover’ fights are the new big things.
Previously, retired fighters would call out fighters from different forms of combat sports, in the hopes of a bigger payday and to get some traction going for themselves. Ever since people have realized that these ‘crossover’ fights can sell stadiums, fight cards like Francis Ngannou vs. Tyson Fury, Nate Diaz vs. Jake Paul and others are being taken seriously. Praising Mayweather for showing the way is UFC legend Chael Sonnen.

Chael Sonnen praises Floyd Mayweather for leading the way
Recently, Chael Sonnen uploaded a video on his YouTube channel where the UFC Legend talked about the ‘brilliance’ of Floyd Mayweather in popularizing ‘merger fights’ or ‘merger events’ to the world.
According to Sonnen, Mayweather has a beautiful business idea that is working well for him, raking in millions of dollars. The idea of filming himself while in the gym, sparring, then outside the gym, and then selling seats so that people can come see him ‘spar’ with an opponent – all in the name of an Exhibition match. Sonnen praised this and said Floyd Mayweather showed the world how to really turn fighting into a business.
“You start to see where this – you start to see where this exclusivity is, only as good as the people agreeing to it, allow to make it. And that doesn’t end in any sport. There is no sport that this couldn’t be done in.“, continued the UFC Legend.

Although he doesn’t box professionally, Mayweather is not one to shy away from an ‘exhibition fight’. The undefeated boxer’s last exhibition fight was against John Gotti III, with Mayweather taking the win easily. However, the fight ended in chaos as the two fighters had to be separated after the bell rang.
