“He Was Being Safe” – Joe Rogan Breaks Down How Floyd Mayweather Nullified Conor McGregor’s Explosiveness

It’s been more than three years since Conor McGregor crossed over to professional boxing and challenged Floyd Mayweather. Despite all this time, Joe Rogan looks back upon the fight to explain how even one of the best MMA strikers in his prime paled in front of the undefeated pugilist.
At the height of his UFC career, Conor McGregor pulled off what most people thought was near impossible. He brought Floyd Mayweather out of retirement and went toe-to-toe with him for ten rounds. While most experts didn’t give the Irishman any chance of handing Mayweather his first defeat, there were many who didn’t even expect him to last as long as he did.
For someone who was in his first professional boxing fight, McGregor did all he could. However, that just wasn’t sufficient to overcome the defensive brilliance of Floyd Mayweather. Joe Rogan, on his podcast, broke down what Mayweather did in order to improve his record to 50-0.

“Conor is a freak. He’s an explosive guy. He’s so fast, and there’s no remedy for that other than getting the guy tired. What Mayweather was doing, he was boxing with him, but he was also preserving. He was being safe. He got clipped a couple of times and realized that Conor can punch. But just drag him in the deep water, and that’s what a guy like Mayweather would do,” Joe Rogan said.

What separates Floyd Mayweather from the other greats of the sport is the fact that he has never been defeated inside the ring. He has set the bar really high in terms of bringing out your best time and time again and how to figure out your opponents.
“He’s the most intelligent in terms of his overall strategy to preserve his health and yet to always win. All the greats have suffered losses and setbacks except him. We know he has had some tough fights, but he is so goddamn good. He is so protected. He knows where to be and where not to be,” Joe Rogan added.

Despite being a defensive savant, there have been instances when an opponent rocked Mayweather. Even McGregor stung him with a left hook during the initial rounds of their fight. However, that wasn’t the most trouble that Mayweather has been in a boxing fight.
“‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley clipped him. He really hurt him. He just grabbed hold of him and held on to him. Then eventually he started kicking ‘Sugar’ Sean’s a*s. He just took time. If you’re a young boxer and you want to know what it feels to be at the top of your game at the age of 41, you gotta be like him, or Bernard Hopkins,” Rogan added.

As of now, Mayweather is retired. However, he is very much open to returning for fights that are purely exhibition. At 43 years of age, he is still very much capable of hanging with the best inside the ring.
