Conor McGregor has found himself being linked to another potential boxing spectacle! The Irish MMA icon has been out of the Octagon since suffering a severe fracture to his leg in 2021 in a bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. His return has been the source of much speculation amongst MMA fans, as so far, UFC CEO Dana White has provided them with no concrete date for the superstar’s return to competition.

But with the recently announced bout between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, an MMA insider seems to think that McGregor may also find himself in the mix for a clash against the social media star turned-boxer instead of possibly returning to the UFC!

According to reports available online, Jake Paul is set to clash against boxing legend and icon, Mike Tyson on July 20 in Texas. The fight will air on Netflix, marking the company’s first venture into the world of combat sports.

As such, Luke Thomas, speaking on his YouTube channel noted, “…you know, sort of semi-moderately popular MMA fighter, the days of that guy getting a payday against Jake Paul, they might be dwindling”. His comments possibly referencing Paul’s past fights against Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren.

He then stated, “Conor McGregor reportedly has two fights left in the UFC, he wants one in June and he wants one at the, closer to like the end of the third or fourth quarter of the year. At least that’s what he said on social media this week. I think he wanted Chandler and then the trilogy with Nate Diaz.  And it’s pretty clear he’s probably looking for these kinds of paydays,”

His comments highlight the fact that McGregor’s return to the UFC is still unconfirmed but the Irishman has indicated that he already has two fights planned for this year. But according to Thomas, “…him (Paul) versus Conor McGregor, if such a fight ends up happening in boxing, would be for an enormous, enormous, enormous amount of money…”

He prefaced this statement by admitting that fans who are “MMA purists” will hate the idea of such a matchup happening, but if Jake Paul does impressively win against Tyson, it would make sense that McGregor pursues the lucrative bout instead of an MMA fight.

Whether McGregor chooses to pursue a clash with Paul remains to be seen, but the possibility underscores the ever-evolving nature of the fight game and the name value that ‘The Notorious’ still brings to any event he chooses to be a part of!

But while he has received another option, McGregor’s delayed return to the UFC has drawn some interesting comments from the man who last faced him inside the Octagon!
