A few things about Dana White are well-known in the MMA scene: He will never abandon Power Slap. He was never friends with Stitch Duran. He loves Conor McGregor, and he hates Oscar De La Hoya.

All set to make his boxing comeback sometime later this year, Oscar Del La Hoya is most famous for his original run in boxing from 1992 to 2008. Within this time, the American went toe-to-toe with some big names in boxing, including Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquaio. After bidding adieu to the sport, the former WBA welterweight champion started a second round in boxing as a promoter. But where does a beef with Dana White fit into all this?

After Canelo Alvarez, Dana White goes off on boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya

At the post-fight press conference of the recently concluded Dana White’s Contender series, Dana White took shots at boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Talking about Del La Hoya’s recent criticism by Canelo Alvarez, White said: “I mean, one of the classiest guys in the world. When I watched this, it’s really the first interview that I’ve ever seen Canelo in because obviously they’re my guys, so I was watching the interview. Canelo is incredibly classy. But what have I told all of you for years about him, him being De La Hoya, and what did Canelo say? No, and it isn’t just me.”

Before his recent matchup against Jermell Charlo, Canelo Alvarez had recently appeared on the ‘Full Send Podcast’ hosted by Nelk Boys. For those unaware, this was a first-of-its-kind interview. Alvarez had never given an interview before any of his previous bouts. Here, the boxer opened up on many topics, including his departure from De La Hoya-helmed Golden Boy Promotions.

Blasting the promoter, Alvarez termed his former boss a ‘hypocrite’. Further, the Mexican questioned De La Hoya’s loyalty and asserted that he was the reason for his and other boxers’ departure from Golden Boy. This is the same instance that was being quoted by White, who took the opportunity to take a dig at ‘The Golden Boy’. Nothing surprising, given the history between the two men.

A history of bad blood between the two combat sports promoters

The bad blood between Dana White and Oscar De La Hoya dates back to 2017. Before Conor McGregor’s bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

De La Hoya, who at the time was promoting Canelo Alvarez’s bout with Gennady Golovkin, criticized this bout. According to him, the matchup was ‘disrespectful’ toward boxing, considering McGregor had never had any professional bouts before.

Dana White fired back at this statement by stating De La Hoya’s jealousy towards McGregor as the reason behind his criticism. Further, he also took a toll on the former boxer’s struggle with addiction. Since then, the two men have gone back and forth against each other on many occasions. White’s recent interview is the latest addition to this series of mudslinging.
