In the world of combat sports, finalizing fights is not an easy task. More often than not, a thrilling fight takes months of contractual back and forths. And when a bout involves the boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, this process gets 10x more complicated and tedious.
Back in June 2023, fans witnessed Mayweather fight New York crime family heir John Gotti III. While some enjoyed this matchup, others felt that it was a complete mismatch. Recently, unexpected developments have led many fans to believe that Mayweather was originally supposed to fight someone else!

Ex-UFC champion was supposed to fight Floyd Mayweather?
Recently, in a video released by TMZ, ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley can be heard making some wild claims about his canceled fight against Floyd Mayweather. According to the UFC veteran, he was the initial opponent for ‘Money’. Moreover, he also revealed that Gotti was a mere backup for the fight.
“It was a fight that was supposed to take place in June of this year. It was not supposed to be Gotti in that ring. It was supposed to be me. He was a backup, that was never the play,” he said. However, Woodley did not reveal the exact reason why this fight fell off.

Going further, he claimed to be in full control of his fight date, venue, opponent, etc, at the present time. “I control the narrative, I control when I fight, I control who fights on the card,” he said. Fans are excited to see if Tyron Woodley vs. Floyd Mayweather is a possibility for the future.

Further in the video, Woodley also revealed his desire to fight legends in the combat sports world. “I’m looking to fight guys that are legendary to me, that I feel like may not have gotten the respect and the money that they um should have gotten when they were in the top of the top,” he said.

He even dropped a few names! “Like George St Pierre. I offered him a dumb bag. He said ‘No, I’m not in that world anymore.’ I offer Nick Diaz a dumb bag. When I say dumb, I’m talking about pushing to 8 figures.”
