On one of its recent episodes, the noted podcaster was joined by the coveted UFC middleweight fighter, Joaquin Buckley. The duo talked about a volley of stuff, including a discussion about the UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, and his technique of fighting.

A lot of the fans had bashed Adesanya and called his last few fights boring. But, Buckley and Rogan, both having a lot of expertise in MMA, agreed on the fact that it is absolutely alright to do whatever needs to be done in order to win.

Joe Rogan preferred winning over being exciting

Buckley kicked things off about this discussion, stating, “I wanna always be exciting. But now we wanna just switch the gear until becoming a winner.” Rogan was a bit moved by this.

The former martial artist went on, “And sometimes guys get criticized for that and I’m opposed to that criticism. People are saying that, oh they’re fighting boring. I don’t know what you think is boring.”

He also stated,I don’t think fighting is ever boring. Because there’s always a potential for something crazy to happen. But, the intelligent fighters, they know how to win.” The martial artist in Rogan was visibly annoyed by the term boring fight.

Buckley also mentioned the boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather, and said, “the best defensive fighter is him, but when we watch him fight, you can call it boring if you want to. But, if you really pay attention to the things that he’s doing, moving around fighters and evading punches… and able to counter fighters, it’s very intriguing.”

Joe Rogan implied that Israel Adesanya is an intelligent fighter

Buckley brought Israel Adesanya into the topic saying, “And now we talk about Izzy”. Rogan also hinted at Adesanya being an intelligent fighter. He went on to talk about how the audience wanted to see more engagements in Adesanya’s fight against Jared Cannonier. However, he was of the opinion that Izzy couldn’t have risked it all as Cannonier packs a lot of power.

He identified this as an intelligent move from ‘The Last Stylebender’ since Adesanya couldn’t have matched the intensity of Cannonier if he had chosen to engage too much.

Buckley agreed with Rogan and stated that he hoped Adesanya would do the same in his upcoming fight against Alex Pereira.

Clearly, there are a lot of differences between how an average fan views a fight and an expert views a fight. A fighter would want to win bouts, whereas fans would want their money’s worth by seeing more engagements.

Do you think Adesanya had boring last few fights?

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
