It’s not an easy task for any athlete to please retired UFC fighter, Chael Sonnen. ‘The American Gangster’ is popular for his trash talk and controversial opinions. Recently, he opened up about his hatred for NBA star Damian Lillard. Sonnen is someone who doesn’t show any reluctance to demand respect and recognition for the athlete he is. However, it seems that Lillard failed to give Sonnen the attention he wanted. Now, this has infuriated the former UFC title challenger.

Lillard rose to fame as a basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers. When ‘The American Gangster’ came across the bobblehead toy of Lillard on Ariel Helwani‘s desk, Sonnen blurted out that he didn’t deserve to be there. Helwani was shocked at first, as he had no idea about Sonnen’s beef with the basketball player. The former UFC star is not someone who brushes his thoughts under the carpet. He talked about the attitude of Lillard that Sonnen had to face.

Chael Sonnen lashes out at the NBA star, Damian Lillard

Chael Sonnen and MMA Hour‘s Ariel Helwani sat to have conversations about the hot topics in the MMA world. ‘The American Gangster’ began the 46-minute interview by taking aim at the NBA star. He said, I see Lillard posting on social media constantly, like clout chasing and boxing and all that stuff and I never see him acknowledge me.

Talking further on the same issue, Sonnen added, “Damian Lillard on social media, particularly when it’s about fighting, which he’s always trying to act like he’s some kind of a tough, you talk to Chael. You don’t ignore Chael and if you do ignore Chael, when you see Chael, Chael will whip your a** and that’s where me and Lillard stand to tell you the truth.”

Even though Sonnen felt that Lillard treated him badly, it is not sure whether Lillard did it deliberately or not. Sonnen, who is from Oregon, feels that the entire Portland Trail Blazers team does not acknowledge ‘The American Gangster’ as a trained athlete hailing from the same place.

Even though Sonnen has a great dislike for Lillard and the entire team, he does not actually want to beat up the NBA star. The retired UFC fighter instead chose to condemn the alleged ‘tough acting’ put forth by the Portland Trail Blazer player. The MMA journalist could not believe his ears, as no one really knew about the beef until Sonnen revealed it on MMA Hour.

"Like many, my journey into the beautiful game began by watching the mesmerizing Lionel Messi, as his impeccable vision on the pitch and role as a playmaker, meticulously calculating the path to goal always amazed me. This fascination with the finer details of soccer strategy naturally extended to my interest in content strategy. However, my zeal for being a soccer content analyst is not only because of Messi's magic, as I am a keen follower of the Becks as well. While in David Beckham, it was a special affinity for his mastery of crosses, passes, and set pieces, in Victoria Beckham, the fashion queen, I find inspiration in how she masterfully navigated the world of aesthetics and brand identity. This unique blend of admiration for both the tactical intricacies of soccer and the world of fashion and entertainment helps me to cover the game from angles that seamlessly balance sport and entertainment. Before joining EssentiallySports, I worked as a content analyst as well. A Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature from a premiere institute has helped me hone my writing skills and given me a unique perspective on the world of sports. Interestingly, besides soccer, I also extensively covered UFC, especially the Joe Rogan podcast. In my free time, I enjoy reading and keeping up with the latest developments in the world of sports.
