Few people were expecting Sean O’Malley to win the bantamweight championship against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292. Even fewer were expecting him to do so in such a spectacular fashion. The bout was seen as a classic grappler vs. striker matchup. Sterling had warned ‘Suga’ that it would only take one mistake for him to be in trouble.

O’Malley, too, was well aware of this. He had talked about being sharp and avoiding takedowns throughout the fight because of the significant threat the ‘Funkmaster’ posed on the ground with his excellent wrestling. However, the Montana native proved his striking prowess and was able to make short work of the New Yorker. And, he was paid a compliment by two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant.

Kevin Durant pays Sean O’Malley a huge compliment

After a hard-fought first round, O’Malley finished things in style in the second round. As Sterling lunged forward with a left hand. O’Malley stepped back without even flinching as the punch buzzes past his face. He countered brilliantly with a right that dropped the longest-reigning bantamweight champion. He then proceeded to ground and pound Sterling until the referee stopped the bout.

After his impressive win, KD took to Twitter after Sean O’Malley’s win at UFC 292 and praised him. “Suga Sean really a different beast. Salute that man” he tweeted.

The new bantamweight champion replied to the tweet and hailed the former league MVP for his kind words.

Game, as they say, recognizes game. But, some feel that the bout was stopped a bit early. Sterling was moving and fighting back at the time of the stoppage, and even the commentary team expressed their disappointment and felt the stoppage was a bit premature.
