A good night’s sleep, according to medical experts, is one of the most important pillars of one’s mental and physical well-being. One of the most common preventers of proper sleep, which a quarter of Americans suffer from, is sleep apnea. It is a disorder in which one’s breathing “repeatedly starts and stops,” according to Mayo Clinic.

And commoners and celebrities alike are afflicted by the disorder. Former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal and rap legend Eminem are just two among the millions who suffer from it. Another famous patient of sleep apnea is Joe Rogan, who revealed how he made another person aware that they suffer from the disease and asked him to seek medical help.

On an episode of his JRE podcast, Joe Rogan told his guest about encountering a man with severe sleep apnea on a flight. He said he heard coughing noises behind him and turned to see an overweight man with his mouth open, struggling to breathe as he slept, a sure sign of sleep apnea.“I was on a plane once and there was a guy behind me and I would hear coughing noises. And I turned around and I was like ‘Oh this poor bastard’. He was a big guy, like very overweight, and I mean I was watching this guy lying there with his mouth open for a long time,” he said.

The UFC commentator then recalled seeing him squirm until he woke up. Rogan then told him that he was probably suffering from sleep apnea. “Then finally he would jostle and catch some air and he woke up. And I said, ‘Hey man, do you know you have sleep apnea,'” Rogan said.

The man was initially puzzled at being told he had sleep apnea. This prompted the Boston native to show him his mouthpiece, which he uses to deal with his apnea. He told the man that he needed to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and start his treatment. The man seemed to not take Rogan’s statements seriously, which prompted the latter to reiterate his advice.

“And he’s like ‘What do you mean?’ And I said, ‘Okay, let me tell you what’s going on’ and I showed him my mouthpiece and go ‘I have this thing I have to sleep with’. I said ‘You got to go to a doctor, get that checked out,’ and he goes ‘Okay thanks’. I go ‘No, no really you got to go to a doctor. It’ll change your life now,” Rogan said.
