Big upsets in MMA and UFC are not new. Yet they never fail from surprising fans. When Leon Edwards knocked out Kamaru Usman at UFC 278, the arena, including Joe Rogan and his fellow commentators couldn’t believe it. After all, Usman was dominant for a long time and could have been won the fight if it wasn’t for the head-kick.

In a recent episode of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’, the Spotify podcaster spoke about the defeat. He also made a comparison with NBA star LeBron James.

Rogan said, “All those sponsors can go f**k themselves. If you would drop Kamaru Usman because of a one-kick knockout in a sport where that’s like dropping LeBron [James] if someone dunked on him. Like no.”

He went on to explain knockouts were a part of MMA.

“What are you talking about? Like, this is what the sport is. That is the consequences and those consequences are available even to the greatest champions. If you get head-kicked, that’s it.”

“That’s the button. You get head-kicked by Leon Edwards, that’s the button…”.

Further, Rogan also gave his opinion about the kick. No one saw it coming as it was towards the end of their fight. That’s what made it so shocking. Rogan said, “It was clean, there’s no surviving that…”.

With the UFC 278 loss, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ lost his welterweight title to the British fighter. However, Usman has spoken about the loss and plans to get back with vengeance.

Usman and Edwards have fought before as well. At UFC on Fox in 2015, Usman was victorious. However, UFC 278 didn’t go in his favor. Regardless, the promotion seems interested in a trilogy.

Post the loss to Edwards, Usman was on Rogan’s podcast where he spoke about the fight. He felt it was a bit of a relief to lose to the 20-3 record holder. The Nigerian spoke about the heavy expectations people had. However, he also said that he was never attached to the title.

He always saw himself as a contender fighting for the title, even though he was the champion. Hence, he felt he gave his very best, even if the fight didn’t end up in his favor.
