Dustin Poirier Says He Would Have Never Fought Conor McGregor If He Would Have Fought Tony Ferguson

The rematch between two UFC veterans, Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor, is finally official. UFC fans seem extremely delighted at the prospect of watching this highly anticipated match up.
The fight will take place on January 23 ’21 at UFC 257 at a location that is yet to be disclosed. But it’s rumored to be at the Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.
The ‘Diamond’ Poirier recently interacted with MMAJunkie, he talked about his rematch with the Mystic Mac, Tony Ferguson fight, and the future of the Lightweight division.

Poirier opened up about the prospect of taking the McGregor fight if he had fought Tony Ferguson, “Yeah, we both (him & Tony) would have taken a trip to the hospital after that one. But these training camps are pretty grueling at this level of competition and preparation.
“So, to do a training camp for Tony to go out there fight, come back home, and plan to do it all over again fly back to Abu Dhabi with my team, do a whole another camp before that would have been a tough task.
“I don’t know if that would have been impossible. I might have been able to do it but it would have been tough for sure,” he added.
Poirier also said that both he and McGregor are completely different fighters now. He was emotional in their first fight, he wanted to ‘hurt’ McGregor but the scenario has completely reversed after their first meet. He now wants to ‘outsmart’ McGregor and beat him.

McGregor & Poirier have previously shared the octagon in 2014, wherein the Irishman beat the American via TKO in Round 1. Moving further, McGregor became the UFC Lightweight champion by beating Eddie Alvarez via TKO.
At that moment, McGregor held the Featherweight Title and was adjudged as ‘Double Champ’ following his win over Alvarez.

Following his loss to McGregor, Poirier turned the tables on his fate magnificently. The ‘Diamond’ secured 9 wins in the Lightweight division.
He beat Max Holloway to bag the Interim Lightweight Title in 2019 and earned his shot towards the ultimate gold. However, he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the title fight, but he put on an exhilarating show for the UFC fans.
Realistically, Poirier has an upper hand going into this rematch against the Notorious one. He has been an active contender in the Lightweight division and is the most improved fighter on the roster.

The ‘Diamond’ is coming off a dominant victory against Dan Hooker in June 2020. He will be extremely pumped getting into this rematch and squaring up with the Irishman.
