In episode #1868 with Dr. Gabor Maté, who is a physician, the commentator spoke about the issue.

Maté spoke about how corporations made products that would addict their consumers. Joe Rogan drew a parallel with pharmaceutical companies. Rogan said, “That’s very dark. And that’s also pharmaceutical companies. I was just watching this very disturbing commercial.”

“Yesterday with children and it was talking about ADHD and it showed a kid that was not paying attention in class. And it showed these kids like playing around and doing things that weren’t supposed to be doing,” he added.

“And then they introduced this medication. … then you have the child raising their hand and then you have everyone clapping. … you have the child with a big smile on their face and you’ve medicated your child to be a successful and integrated person in society.”

Further, Rogan’s guest continued the conversation further by talking about his book, which dealt with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). He revealed was also diagnosed with it in his 50s. However, he did not like the way the medical field looks at it as a disease.

More on Joe Rogan and Dr. Gabor Maté’s ADHD discussion

Maté explained the hallmark characteristics of ADHD. But he refused to be it was a ‘disease’ and ‘heritable’. Thus, both the personalities discussed a scenario where a person doesn’t have an opinion of fight or flight when put in a difficult situation.

So Rogan felt the only option left was that of distraction. They agreed it was a coping mechanism instead. However, ADHD discussions have happened frequently on the JRE podcast.

A few years ago, he also discussed it with Matthew Walker, a professor of neuroscience and psychology. Additionally, he has also had Amishi Jha, a psychologist, on his podcast where they discussed ADD (attention deficit disorder). She spoke in-depth about it and clarified several concepts that formed its crux.

Jha explained the concept of attention with an interesting flashlight comparison. Hence, psychology and health-related discussions seem to recur on Rogan’s podcast.
