In a shocking turn of events back in 2010, MMA veteran Fedor Emelianenko faced Fabricio Werdum at the “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” event in San Jose, Calif. Despite being the favorite, Emelianenko’s quick first-round knockdown of Werdum led to his ultimate downfall via a fight-ending triangle choke. While Emelianenko faced accusations of avoiding tougher competition in the UFC, he undeniably confronted Werdum, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace and former UFC fighter ranked among the division’s top 10. Emelianenko, with a 29-fight undefeated streak at that time, initially seemed poised for a swift victory. Within 30 seconds, he stunned Werdum, who ended up in a seated position. Emelianenko followed with a barrage of hammer fists, but Werdum’s quick thinking allowed him to secure an armbar, forcing Emelianenko to tap out just 69 seconds into the bout. This surprising turn raised questions about Emelianenko’s legacy, reminding fans of the sport’s unpredictability.
