After finally conquering his biggest rival, Alex Pereira, Israel Adesanya, has shifted his attention to Dricus Du Plessis. The middleweight champion has been beefing with the #6 ranked contender over the latter’s comments about the champion’s African heritage. Du Plessis claimed to be more African than Adesanya, who lives and trains in New Zealand. These comments did not sit well with ‘Stylebender’ and the pair have been going back and forth ever since.
With Israel Adesanya clearing out the top 5 rankings in the division, Du Plessis seemed like a fresh choice of opponent for the champion. However, that option has gone out the window as the South African star is now set to face Robert Whittaker at UFC 290. The winner of this fight will face Adesanya later this year for the title, as per Dana White.

Former champion Robert Whittaker is a tough ask for anyone in the division. Adesanya’s City kickboxing teammate Dan Hooker is of the same opinion. In fact, ‘The Hangman’ believes Du Plessis made the wrong choice in taking the Whittaker fight, as opposed to a direct title shot.

Dan Hooker slams Dricus Du Plessis for fighting Robert Whittaker
In a recent interview he gave to Submission Radio, Dan Hooker gave his thoughts on the upcoming bout between Dricus Du Plessis and Robert Whittaker. The City Kickboxing captain was not pleased with the fight for his own reasons. He said, “I don’t think Dricus has the head to beat Rob, you know what I mean… I feel like… Dricus could have got the title shot next off of not fighting anyone. Because who’s the next logical next step?”
He continued, “I’m not saying he’s got no chance of beating Rob. I’m just saying it’s the toughest fight in the division. And he didn’t need to take that risk. He didn’t need to roll those dice.”

The #11 ranked lightweight had another suggestion for who Du Plessis could have fought to earn a title shot. He said, “I feel like he could have beaten Sean Strickland and he would have got a title shot off of beating Sean Strickland.
Hooker further added, “If I had to fight Sean Strickland or Robert Whittaker, I would fight Sean Strickland. It’s a bit of a stylistic matchup for him and a much more winnable fight. So I just feel he played that a little wrong.”
Whittaker vs. Du Plessis goes down on July 8, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Who do you think wins that fight? And do you agree with Hooker’s comments?
