UFC fighters promoting cryptocurrencies have never ended without backlash from the fans. Need examples? Even a noble and respected champion like Khabib Nurmagomedov wasn’t spared after endorsing an NFT project that promised fans a meet-and-greet and 29 rewards, the criticism came swiftly. Khamzat Chimaev received similar slander for promoting the Smash meme coin and later blamed his manager for the fallout. Now, Conor McGregor is under fire, with Irish fans especially vocal in their disappointment.
When it comes to cryptocurrency, McGregor is no stranger. He’s long been a believer in crypto. ‘The Notorious’ recently launched a meme coin called $REAL, aiming to raise $1 million from investors for a legitimate launch. However, according to Decrypt.Co, it only managed to generate $392,315 in USDC from 668 bidders. This underwhelming response has effectively brought his crypto venture to a halt. At least for some time.
The Irishman apparently still believes that Crypto is designed to uplift people and also offers an Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve. That he believes will give power to the people of his nation, “Crypto in it’s origin was founded to give power back to the people. An Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve will give power to the people’s money. I will be cohosting a Twitter space to talk about what I want to see changed. Victory to Ireland!” – McGregor wrote on X.

Although it’s not entirely clear, McGregor’s suggestion may have been inspired by the 45th and 47th U.S. President, Donald Trump, who announced his ambition to make the United States the crypto capital of the world. In March 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, signaling a major shift in U.S. policy toward digital assets. Given that the Irishman is known to admirer of POTUS, it’s certainly possible that Trump’s stance played a role in influencing his views.
Strategic Bitcoin reserve is a also one of those topic that generates different views, both agaisnt and for. However, Irish fans are not too pleased with the former two-division UFC champion’s latest move into crypto. Many have taken to social media to voice their reactions targeting McGregor directly. The sentiment is clear: crypto and fighters promoting it simply don’t go hand in hand. So, let’s take a look at what the fans are saying.

One user bluntly urged Conor McGregor to drop the whole thing, writing, “please not mcgregor.” Another user highlighted the political angle, remarking, “He’s playing Trump’s exact playbook.”
The backlash continued to mount as one user wrote, taking a jab at McGregor’s fading stardom, his recent but unsuccessful foray into politics, and likely referencing his previous $REAL meme coin venture. “Thought he’d be pushing McR–ey Coin or something,” a pointed dig toward his recent legal troubles involving Nikita Hand.

Meanwhile, the more generic backlash continued with comments like, “Christ. Another mo–n jumping on the bandwagon,” reflecting a growing frustration among fans who feel McGregor is only further alienating himself by diving into the controversial world of crypto.
That backlash didn’t end without a pointed message either. One user quoted, “The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject,” subtly suggesting that McGregor lacks the expertise to speak on cryptocurrency or advise others about it. These are just a few of the reactions the biggest MMA superstar in the world is receiving over his latest crypto-related tweet. Do you agree with McGregor’s stance?
