Conor McGregor is the most popular star in the history of the UFC. So, it is not uncommon to see up-and-coming stars being compared to him and being dubbed ‘the next Conor McGregor. Sean O’Malley, for example, is often compared to the Irishman.

But, it is easy to see why Ian Machado Garry is being compared to McGregor. Like McGregor, the 25-year-old hails from Ireland and is massively talented. Boasting an undefeated record, he dominated his last fight against Neil Magny at UFC 292 in Boston earlier this month. The confident welterweight has compared himself to Khabib Nurmagomedov in interviews after the fight. His stellar performance drew praise from analysts and fighters alike.

UFC legends react to Ian Machado Garry dominating Magny

Garry won a unanimous decision against Magny after three rounds in the Octagon. The Irishman attacked Magny’s leg, which gave out thrice in the second round. Though he got to his feet quickly, the American’s leg was visibly hurt, causing him to hobble for the remainder of the fight. UFC middleweight Israel Adesanya commented on the difference in speed between the two in his YouTube live stream of the event.

The pain. Ohhh! Difference in speed. That leg, that leg, that leg,” he said in a clip posted by Garry on his Instagram.

Chael Sonnen reminded the audience that he had always known how good Garry was. “As far as performance goes, I have maintained for you a period of time that Ian Garry doesn’t know how good Ian Garry is,” the West Lynn native said.

Garry would later express his satisfaction with his performance against Magny. He was happy at being able to dominate Magny despite the fight being on short notice, and having to change his fighting style. He compared his dominance in the bout to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has never even lost a round in the UFC, and promised to continue this run.

“The last person to get that scorecard was Khabib. That’s the dominance we’re talking about…I believe that the performance was so dominant and so clinical, so smart and intelligent… And I took that fight on 10 days’ notice. I was fighting a completely different style for this matchup… and came up with the perfect plan to completely maul Neil Magny. That’s the level of dominance we’re dealing now,” Garry said.

It is clear that Garry has made quite an impression with his last fight, which notched another victory to his stellar 13-0 record. But, some fans feel that Garry needs to face some more good opponents to prove himself. What are your impressions of Ian Machado Garry? Let us know in the comments section below.
