A number of UFC fighters come from backgrounds that have a lot of darkness in it. From war-plagued childhoods to extreme poverty, a lot of MMA fighters’ journey to becoming a fighter is a feat in itself. The noted podcast of the UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan, often becomes the platform for fighters to bring out such stories. Recently, the famed UFC Middleweight, Sean Strickland, joined Rogan and revealed one such mishap in his life.

Strickland also talked about one of the major accidents of his life, which left him in immense pain. The ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ host was taken completely aback after listening to it and also the aftermath of that accident which Strickland still bore with him. Although this accident left ‘The Tarzan’ in immense pain, he never repeated his father’s mistake.

Sean Strickland shocked Joe Rogan with this revelation

The duo of Rogan and Strickland discussed a number of other issues apart from the latter’s accident. They started things off with a discussion about how pills can be really destructive for a person.

Most fans know that pills are also used as a source of recreative intoxication. But, often the users aren’t aware of their habit-forming nature. This, in turn, leads to them forming a dependency on the substance and subsequently abusing it.

Strickland revealed that his own father got diagnosed with cancer due to his addiction to pills. He said,My dad died of cancer. My dad, dude, he was so fu**ed up on pills, that like he had every kind of cancer”. But this incident induced a strong distaste for pills in Strickland.

He revealed, “In my motorcycle accident, man… I fu**in tore. I’m so missing my quadricep, the left part of my knee[banged] on the road, and the kneecap. But, not taking pills since I grew up, and I was just gonna be in pain”. It was understandable that ‘Tarzan’ didn’t take any medication in the form of pills to help him with the trouble after his accident.

Rogan was absolutely startled by the fact that Strickland had one out of the four quadriceps removed from his body. He asked, “What’s wrong with you quadracep? You don’t have a quad?”

The ’32-year-old’ replied with an affirmation and also revealed how he felt about that. He also stated that it could be fixed, but the toll it would take on him would be unmanageable.

Sean Strickland can repair his injury, but he won’t

The ‘JRE host’ also expressed his inquisitiveness towards what Strickland could do to get his injury repaired. He asked, How do they fix it?”. But, the noted UFC Middleweight stated that it would be a long and gruesome process which he labeled as “a pain in the a**”.

However, the most unaffordable part for Strickland was probably the time it would take for him to heal from the entire process. He said, I may be out for a year or two years.”

It’s quite understandable that ‘Tarzan’ can’t afford to do that. With a superb win over Abus Magomedov at UFC Vegas 76, Strickland might be in the run for a Middleweight title shot. Amid such situations, it’s quite understandable that ‘Tarzan’ won’t opt to put himself out of the competition due to this injury with which he had fought for years.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
