In a recent announcement, UFC President Dana White said that the promotion would head to Australia for UFC 293. For the first time since 2011, the UFC would hold a PPV event in Sydney. White also announced that they had signed a new deal with the New South Wales government to hold multiple PPV events over the next couple of years.
White’s announcement has huge implications for Australian MMA. There have been several elite fighters in the UFC from Australia. Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker top the list. The new deal between the UFC and the New South Wales government opens the door for more such athletes to perform in front of their home crowds.

The last time the UFC visited Sydney was for a fight night in 2017 and the last PPV event was in 2011. The last UFC event in Australia was UFC 284 in February earlier this year. Now, the UFC will return to ‘Down Under’ this year on September 10 with UFC 293.
In a recent announcement, New South Wales’ Premier Chris Minns had an encouraging announcement about welcoming the promotion back to Sydney.
UFC 293 gets a warm welcome by Australian Premier
UFC stars Alexander Volkanovski, Robert Whittaker, and Tai Tuivasa joined Premier Chris Minns as he gave his blessing for the event. The 43-year-old shared his enthusiasm for the event and gave his insights on the benefits of hosting it. He reiterated the same via a Facebook post.
He wrote, “These are some of the world’s best athletes- but for 10 years, NSW refused to host them, until now. We’re changing that by bringing a UFC mega pay-per-view event to Sydney, UFC 293. Allowing home-grown athletes to compete on the world stage on their home turf.”

He added, “These events will be broadcast to over 900 million households over the world. And to top it all off, it’ll inject tens of millions of dollars into the economy, right here in NSW. That’s what I call a knockout.”
According to recent chatter, Israel Adesanya will headline the pay-per-view. With any luck, Aussie fans will get to see a trilogy bout between Adesanya and Whittaker.
What do you make of the deal between UFC and NSW government? What do you think of the latest inflow of support for Australian fighters?
