Alex Pereira was only recently crowned the rightful champion after defeating Jiri Prochazka for the vacant title and is yet to defend his title. Could it be Khalil Rountree Jr. then?

At UFC Vegas 83, Khalil Rountree took down Anthony Smith via a brilliant knockout. Once he had salivated his win, he knew he wanted more for himself, and unexpectedly called out Poatan. Here’s what Pereira replied in a recent Instagram story.

Pereira is not exactly known for being a man of many words. His persona has become synonymous with the stone-face emoji that shows no emotion. Gimmick or not, Pereira’s character is rather fascinating. His response to Rountree’s win too was nothing out of the ordinary.

“This was a really good fight,” Pereira wrote in an Instagram story of Rountree against a fallen Smith. This comes hours after the fight happened which means it’s most likely an acknowledgement of the callout. Does this mean ‘Poatan’ is ready for Rountree’s challenge?

Both the fighters secured their last win with insane knockouts. While Rountree managed to destroy Smith with a brilliant two-punch combo, Pereira capitalized on a takedown attempt to break down Prochazka’s defense with punches and elbows.

However, perhaps Rountree has a long way to go before getting to the champion himself. And as usual, ‘Poatan’ has his favorite nemesis in sight even from a different weight class. He immediately called Israel Adesanya to the light heavyweight division after his win. Will he have to settle for Rountree instead?

Does Rountree need more fights?

Rountree has been fighting in the UFC since the year 2016. As of now, the fighter is on a five fight win streak. At number 11, the chances of him fighting the champion look pretty bleak. Anthony Smith was the 8th ranked fighter in the light heavyweight division and perhaps Rountree’s most significant fight in recent times.

However, bigger fights likely await the fighter. He would have to climb the ranks first. Now that he’s defeated number 8, perhaps fighting number 7 Johnny Walker would be a much better start for the fighter. Once he tears through all of his opponents, then he can take down the champion eventually. Do you think he needs to wait more too? Let us know in the comments.
