Prior to his first title fight against Israel Adesanya, Pereira beat Sean Strickland. In fact, it was his win against the ranked contender that slingshot him into the title fight. Recently, the former opponents teamed up to train and Pereira was picking his training partner to beat Magomedov. His open statements about the same led to some back-and-forth with Magomedov’s camp, which almost ended in a five-figure bet.

Alex Pereira reveals bizarre betting story behind UFC Vegas 76

According to Alex Pereira, his comments backing Sean Strickland to win the UFC Vegas 76 main event ticked off Magomedov’s camp. Pereira was so confident that he said in an interview he would bet an amount that equaled Magomedov’s purse on Strickland winning. The 35-year-old revealed that Magomedov’s manager contacted the interviewer to make this bet official.

He continued, “I did not know what his purse was but then the manager said something about $10,000. And I tried to find, until yesterday, a strategy to arrange for us both to deposit the money in an account and we didn’t figure it out. So I sent a message to the interviewer and said if there is no safe bet, we can’t do it. But if I did it, I would have won, right?”

All throughout the video, Pereira did not seem impressed with Magomedov. The former champion slammed the Dagestani’s record, calling it fake. He also took jibes at the German national for the way he gassed out after a powerful start to the opening round.
