Aljamain Sterling wants a shot at the featherweight title. It looks like Alexander Volkanovski can’t catch a break. ‘The Great’ has reigned supreme in the featherweight division since 2019 and has gone undefeated for over 1500 days. ‘Aljo’ is the former bantamweight champion so what is he doing calling out ‘Volk’?

At UFC 300, Sterling will be going up against Calvin Kattar. If he wins his featherweight bout, perhaps he could be on the track to being in the line for a championship bout. But will he get it right away? That’s questionable for various reasons. Here’s what he believes he should have.

Is the door wide open for Aljamain Sterling?

UFC 300 will be the first time that ‘Funk Master’ participates in a featherweight bout in his UFC career. However, is one fight in the division enough for him to earn a title shot against a champion who’s reigned for so long? Many fans believe that it can’t be that easy.

Yes, ‘Aljo’ is a former champion of the bantamweight division. That lends credit to his skills but he’s only starting out. His first opponent from the division is the #8 ranked fighter Kattar, meaning Sterling isn’t going up against a top 5 fighter. However, his opinion isn’t way off track either.

“If I beat [Calvin Kattar] the way that I think I’m capable of doing,” he said in a recent interview. “I think I’m right next in line for a title shot. I don’t think that’s too far fetched of a thing. You look at the guys at the top that already fought for the belt, if (alex) Volkanovski wins again, I think the door is wide open,” he expressed.

Volkanovski is currently set to go up against Ilia Topuria at UFC 298. Topuria is a fearsome contender for the title and may as well end his reign in the division. But if ‘The Great’ remains at the top of the ladder, will Aljamain Sterling get his shot? Fans had some opinions.

Fans divided on Sterling’s opinion

UFC fans were not sure whether they could believe in Sterling for his take here. While some were certain that the former bantamweight champion was correct, others felt like he had a long way to go before he could challenge the champion. Here are some of the most interesting takes from Instagram.

“Volk gets headkicked once by the best fighter in the world and now aljo thinks he has a chance”

While some thought Sterling was getting ahead of himself, others believed Movsar Evloev should be next in line.

“Not when Evloev is 18-0”

Yet others believed Sterling won’t win his next fight.

“Kattars KOing you bro”

Others criticized the take itself.

“Aljo has the worst takes in all of the ufc”

Finally, some fans stood by ‘Aljo’.

“He’s right, I see it going like this if Volk loses he gets the rematch and then Sterling fights Evloev or Max for #1 contender. If Volk wins and Sterling wins especially by finish when Calvin has only lost by finish once not counting injury than Sterling would fight Volk next 100%”

Others predicted a few more fights before a title shot.

probably one more win in between, but definitely close.”

“If aljo wins, I wanna see him vs. Max.”

Clearly, the fans are not too sure about ‘Funk Master’ and his beginnings in the featherweight division. He has proven himself in the bantamweight division but will he be able to win his fight against Katter?

UFC 300 is about to be the year’s biggest pay-per-view so far. If ‘Aljo’ defeats Kattar, he will be on his way to Volkanovski’s title. Perhaps a fight against the likes of Max Holloway would be a better indicator of whether or not he’ll get to the title. What do you think?
