Aljamain Sterling won the UFC bantamweight title; He did it well within the unified rules. However, fans didn’t accept him as the champion, since they felt a disqualification should not grant ‘Funkmaster’ the title. Besides, there were some who thought Sterling was acting after the illegal knee strike. Sterling spoke about it on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

After winning the rematch and putting the Petr Yan episode behind him, Sterling talked about the fans’ reception of the result of their first contest.

“It looked like I was faking. I’m like guys, I didn’t know there was a protocol on how you’re supposed to react after being illegally kneed into head from a shot you don’t expect to see; while you’re exhausted in a high-stakes fight… Was I supposed to pretend like I was being, like, Macho? Like, I’m just trying to gather myself,” Sterling suggested.

The bantamweight champion offered his friends and family members were there to watch him fight for his first UFC championship bout. Thus, after the contest, they celebrated his win. Though Sterling was not happy with how he won the contest, he didn’t want to spoil his companions’ moment. Thus, he posed with the belt for them.

However, the fans bashed Sterling to celebrate a win that they felt was unmerited.

Joe Rogan asked Aljamain Sterling about the concussion

The longtime UFC analyst, Joe Rogan was calling the fights when Sterling fought Yan for the first time. On the JRE MMA Show, Rogan and Sterling discussed the extent of the injury he suffered from the illegal knee strike.

When Rogan asked whether the shot concussed Sterling, He replied, “100%; So, my analysts out there, my doctors that know what a concussion is. They know all the symptoms. They know what a concussion is. I threw up later that night. They thought I was drinking. I was like, I didn’t drink.”

Sterling had to wait for 13 months before getting one over Yan. He didn’t feel the first fight was the right way to win the championship. In the rematch, ‘Funkmaster’ showed his grappling prowess and defeated Petr Yan via a controversial split decision.
