Islam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira and became the UFC lightweight champion of the world. Which shouldn’t be surprising, given the fact that he trains under ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, Makhachev has only lost one fight since competing for the UFC, and that error was never made again. He is now gearing up for what will probably be the biggest fight of his career against No. 1 P4P champion, Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 284.

It is Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s biggest dream to see Makhachev ranked as the best fighter overall, pound-for-pound.

Islam Makhachev strives to honor Coach Khabib

Ahead of UFC 284, Islam Makhachev has sent a special message to his opponent, the No.1 pound-4-pound fighter, Alexander Volkanovski. If Makhachev wins this bout, he will fulfill Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s vision of seeing him ranked as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Therefore, Makhachev plans to leave no stone unturned to make this dream come true and has notified Volkanovski of the same, too.

“Fight camp is on., be ready short guy 😎👊🏼 #ufc284”, wrote Makhachev in his recent tweet; further stating the preparations have begun from his end. This tweet also served all the hype that the fans need ahead of the big fight.

This battle is equally significant for Makhachev and Volkanovski and will be a true neck-to-neck matchup based on both the combatants’ statistics. Makhachev has a goal to fulfill wherein Volkanovski eyes the double champ tag.

Coming for Alexander Volkanovski

Khabib Nurmagomedov places a high value on becoming the greatest fighter, pound-for-pound. After his match with Justin Gaethje, he surpassed Jon Jones to claim the title of greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. And now he wants Islam Makhachev to have that title. At the UFC 280 post-fight interview, ‘The Eagle’ singled out Volkanovski and shared his plan for Makhachev.

“I told you guys, Islam Makhachev is the best fighter, not in lightweight, he is a pound-for-pound No.1 fighter.” said Khabib. He further added, “Charles Oliveira is No.2 pound-for-pound, right? He finished Charles. Now is our plan, fly all the way to Australia and fighting pound-for-pound King backyard. Volkanovski, let’s do it. We know we gonna finish this guy.”
