The best-laid plans of mice and men, often go awry. And that, exactly, is what has happened to the plans of the UFC and Dana White ahead of UFC 294. What was supposed to be perhaps one of the best cards of the year, has turned upside down after an unfortunate series of events. Charles Oliveira, according to UFC CEO Dana White, got injured and split his eyebrow wide open during practice for the upcoming bout. And Paulo Costa had to get his right elbow operated on because of a bad staph infection just weeks ahead of his bout against ‘Borz’.

Which is why the UFC 294 co-main event may be in trouble, as was indicated by Dana White‘s statement about the middleweight bout. And, it seems, Khamzat Chimaev shares the same uncertainty felt by most fans about Paulo Costa‘s status for the bout amid speculations the bout may be off. And to make matters worse, the UFC is reportedly having a hard time finding replacement for Costa, even though his pull-out has yet to be officially confirmed.

Costa recently revealed that he underwent elbow surgery a few weeks ago. This, predictably, raised concerns that the Brazilian may pull out of his much-anticipated co-main event bout against ‘Borz’ at UFC 294 on October 21. However, Costa has maintained that he would not be pulling out of the bout.

But, Dana White has revealed in a press conference a few hours ago that “it’s possible,” that the bout may be off. And, amid this uncertainty, Khamzat Chimaev came out and asked Costa directly what the status of the fight was. “Pavlovichburatina what’s happening? ” he tweeted from his official Twitter account.

However, it didn’t stop there and the Chechen also took a shot at Costa. This took the form of a rather unconventional advice for the Brazilian. He posted two picture of Costa side by side. Both pictures show him on a wheelchair with hospital scrubs on. The left picture, however, has been edited to show ‘The Eraser’ with long, flowing blonde hair. “One more surgery,” the Emirati captioned the picture.

Chimaev seems to be calling the macho ‘Borrachina’ a coward with this post. Which is not surprising, given the bad blood between the two, who have made their mutual dislike for each other clear. ‘Borz’ has promised to make Costa cry, and Costa has promised to kill the Emirati, just to give one example.

UFC reportedly having trouble finding Costa replacement

Charles Oliveira has pulled out of his main event title bout against Islam Makhachev. However, he has been replaced by Alexander Volkanovski, who will rematch the Dagestani in perhaps the most anticipated match the promotion could have made under the circumstances. However, whether the UFC can find a suitable replacement if Costa pulls out remains to be seen.

The promotion reportedly offered #5 ranked middleweight Marvin Vettori a shot at Chimaev as a replacement for Costa. However, he seems to have refused the short-notice fight. But, #7 ranked Roman Dolidze seems to have thrown his name into the hat with a cryptic tweet. “Khamzat? #ufc294,” he tweeted.

To be clear, Costa has not yet withdrawn from the bout- officially. But, there are strong indications that he might. And the UFC seems to be having a hard time finding a replacement to face Chimaev. And if they fail to do so, the ‘Volk’ – Makhachev notwithstanding, it would dampen the excitement for the UFC 294 quite significantly.
