Former two-division UFC champion, Conor McGregor, was keeping a close eye on how things unfolded at UFC Fight Night: Rodriguez vs Waterson. He noted Gillespie’s win and tweeted out his reaction. “This Gregor Gillespie cat is no way in hell the best fisherman in MMA. Not even f**kin close!” wrote ‘The Notorious’.

Gillespie started the fight at an insane pace and kept on pushing until Ferreira broke and accepted his superiority as a wrestler. Now, ‘The Gift’, who ground out to the decision, is once again back on the win column after getting his undefeated record snapped at his last fight.

Gillespie was once considered the future of the UFC’s lightweight division. But his last fight halted his progress a bit as he took a time off for over a year. Now, ‘The Gift’ is back on the horse again and wants a higher-ranked opponent in his next fight. However, he didn’t call out any particular name in his post-fight interview.

After his grappling clinic, the 34-year-old also recognized that he doesn’t have a lot left on his clock. Though ‘The Gift’ is not old, he needs to fight cream of the crop contenders from now on to establish himself as a top lightweight.

What’s next for Gregor Gillespie after his win?

Gillespie deserves top-ranked fighter next. Now, it remains to be seen who the UFC matches him up against in his next fight. Meanwhile, Diego Ferreira is currently on a 2-fight skid as he dropped a decision against Beneil Dariush in his last fight. This was only the second time he has been finished in his professional MMA career.

Both fighters are good contenders in the UFC’s lightweight division. However, with this win, there is no doubt Gillespie will get a contender with a number next to his name in his next fight.
