It all started at UFC 196 when a Stockton-born fighter shook up the whole world when he beat Conor McGregor by submission in the 2nd round. As the world saw a beaten McGregor lying on the mat, they couldn’t believe their eyes. But the winner that night stole the show when he said, “I’m not surprised, mother*****”. On that note, a rivalry was born, not for a few events or years but for the decades to come.

Following this defeat, McGregor had all the grudge he could hold for Nate Diaz, and a rematch was set for UFC 202. The fight ended up being one of the biggest draws in the history of UFC, where McGregor outstruck Diaz for 5 rounds to take home the victory and tie their scores at 1-1. Since then, both have become even bigger household names than before.

The trilogy fight never came to be; only speculations and a few hints. Once McGregor addressed a potential trilogy fight with Diaz, stating, “I owe him a fight. I owe Nate a fight. So I gotta obligate that you know? In [our] rematch, I got the better of him, and I owe him the trilogy for sure.”

Conor McGregor has built his empire expanding through the music industry to fashion, whereas Diaz has taken advantage of his name and earned some big bucks after retiring from MMA and trying his luck in boxing. In his last encounter, he fought Jorge Masvidal, whom he beat by unanimous decision, and took back his loss of the BMF title from their fight in the UFC. However, it’s his loss to ‘The Problem Child’ that has come back to haunt him.

In 2023, Diaz lost to Jake Paul by a unanimous decision in a fight where Paul was able to knock down the UFC legend on one occasion. A rare sight to see. Coming back to this day, Diaz has hinted at a return to fighting, but without confirming whether it’s the ring or the Octagon.

Recently, Diaz took to his Instagram amid his feature at the Russian TUF equivalent show, ALF Reality, where he will lead a team against a team led by UFC Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and wrote: “Us.” As brief and as mysterious as ever, Nate Diaz is an icon that the fans miss the presence of every day. From iconic presser moments to his legendary trash talk and his Octagon antics, Diaz’s unconventional approach to every scenario has given him a special place in the heart of the MMA community.
