Paddy Pimblett has become an overnight sensation in the UFC. He recently fought and won the second fight of his UFC career and became a fan favorite. Critics have pointed out flaws in his technique that were evident even in his latest fight, which he eventually won via submission. Contrastingly, many have thrown comparisons with UFC greats, such as Conor McGregor.

However, Chael Sonnen believes it is more because of his on-screen gimmicks and mic skills than it is because of his fighting.

In a recent interview after Paddy Pimblett’s convincing win over Kazula Vargas, the legendary MMA analyst shared his opinion. He said, “The comparison with Conor McGregor purely comes with the mouth. He has not shown the skills yet, he has not shown the finesse, he has not shown the power. I do believe he has them, I do believe.

The former UFC middleweight believes ‘The Baddy’ has a chance to reach the top, but it will be a test of his dedication.

Sonnen continued, “A lot of guys have a level of success like Paddy just had. They have this great moment and they do what we call resting on your laurels. Talking about the good old day, other guys use that as a springboard. That’s the motivation, that’s the drive, that’s the rush, that’s the success I want to continue to have and I’m going to focus like I’ve never focused before.”

“Now that’s the test that he is in right now. I don’t know Paddy well enough to tell you what his character is like. However, I did follow his career… he is only improving George. The guy’s skills are solid, they’re far from bad.”

However, as per Sonnen, there’s still a long way for Paddy Pimblett to be compared to ‘The Notorious’. “He’s a black belt in a couple of different disciplines for sure. Can he get a gold belt? That’s what you’re talking about when you’re making a comparison to Conor McGregor,” he concluded later.
