Sean O’Malley never thought that after a series of blockbuster fights against opponents like Petr Yan, Aljamain Sterling, and Marlon Vera, his title would be snatched away just a year after winning it. That too at the hands of Sterling’s best friend, Merab Dvalishvili. While O’Malley, initially accepted his ‘lackluster‘ performance right after the fight without any excuses, it seems that later he had a sudden change of heart.

He claimed, “I won the first, third, and fifth rounds,” questioning the judges’ scorecards and launching a crusade against his critics. And although this claim was dismissed by UFC head honcho Dana White and fight analysts, it seems like ‘Suga’ has found support in none other than Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen stepped forward and posted an infographic shared by an MMA-oriented page on Instagram, echoing O’Malley’s sentiments. “Merab is a b-tch still! I had him running around,” O’Malley claimed,” holding his f*cking little gut. The champ is here! The champ is here! Go rewatch that fight. 135 bantamweight champion of the world is still here.!”

Uncle Chael conforming, further made an interesting observation, about Joe Rogan, Jon Anik, and Daniel Cormier, as he boldly stated, “There’s controversy, go see rounds 1, 3, and 5. watch that without commentating. come back and tell me you don’t see controversy.”

But although Sonnen openly supported ‘Suga’, long before the fight, he had expressed doubts about whether O’Malley could repeat his astonishing performance against Merab Dvalishvili, like the one he gave a year ago against Aljamain Sterling.

When Chael Sonnen issues a warning to Sean O’Malley

Since his UFC debut in 2017, Sean O’Malley, heavily inspired by his idol Conor McGregor, quickly made a name for himself in the bantamweight division by derailing every opponent in his path with his striking skills. Impressed by ‘Suga’ rapid success, UFC CEO Dana White awarded him a title shot against the reigning division king, Aljamain Sterling.

However, this decision was met with criticism, many questioned O’Malley’s worthiness for a title shot. At that point, the only top 10 bantamweight ‘Suga’ had faced before challenging for the title was Petr Yan. Prior to this, O’Malley had not fought the division’s elite, leading fans to question whether he deserved this opportunity.

As ‘Suga’ prepared to take on Merab Dvalisvili, many wondered if he could replicate his stellar performance against Sterling. Chael Sonnen raised doubts about this in a YouTube video, stating, “It’s going to be hard to outdo that. Sean O’Malley is going to have a very hard time ever looking better than he did at UFC 299. He put such a gap between himself and his competitors that he doesn’t have to look that good ever again. That Sean, the one Chito Vera had to deal with, can beat anybody. Anybody. But can he duplicate it?”
