Tony Ferguson is a man with a mission to avenge his loss. Though he had tasted defeat before, he was on a seven-year, 12-fight win streak before losing his fight to Gaethje. Therefore, it is understandable that the former interim champion wants to bounce back with a win as soon as possible.

In a recent interview, a frustrated Tony went on a rant about issues like his last fight, Conor McGregor, Michael Chandler, and a few more things. ‘El Cucuy’ also mentioned a possible move up to welterweight just to stay active as he is unable to secure a fight at lightweight. Ferguson has previously fought at welterweight and won the ultimate fighter at 170 lbs.

On the recent episode of Ariel and the Bad Guy, Sonnen and Helwani dissected Tony’s statement of wanting to move up in weight to fight at 170 pounds. Chael added, “There is nothing I like more than when an established star changes weight…. I don’t like it for right now. Tony Ferguson is in a wonderful spot. Tony Ferguson is a star… I think Tony is being looked at right now in a very favorable light. Tony is frustrated cause he wants to stay busier.”

Sonnen continued, “Changing weight classes is not going to solve that problem…. Tony was able to come out and have that first fight against Justin Gaethje in the pandemic…He has not tasted defeat in a meaningful period of time. Ariel, that’s a real thing to a champion like Tony. He wants to erase that…. I listened to an interview you did with him yesterday. He told you how much he hates defeat, and how much it eats away at him, and also told you something that is very true. You’re only as good as your last fight. He lost his last fight. He does not want to be a loser, he wants to get it right. I get it. But Tony, please, be patient.”

Following his recent loss to Justin, ‘El Cucuy’ was set to fight Dustin Poirier was in the works. However, it did not materialize as Poirier and the UFC could not come to terms. It now looks as though ‘The Diamond’ will fight Conor, thereby leaving Tony without an opponent.

Would you be in favor of Ferguson moving up to welterweight? If not, who should he fight at lightweight?
