Themba Gorimbo had no place to stay after he moved to the United States. And so, he slept on a couch in the gym. The 11-4 welterweight fighter, however, is lately winning hearts. Gorimbo, who came into the spotlight after his tragic past came to the surface, was recently supported by one of the biggest stars in the world.

Dwyane Johnson too previously took notice of this and gifted Gorimbo his own house to. The welterweight fighter has since focused on trying to give back to his people. In this instance, he now has another person to thank.

Themba Gorimbo thanks Dustin Poirier for a hefty donation

From fixing water pumps in the village to supporting old people with cataracts, Themba Gorimbo has done plenty to support people in Zimbabwe, his home country.

Gorimbo, specifically, decided to take up an initiative around eye surgery, after a visit to his home made the fighter realize that people from his village needed cataract surgery. This feeling was further emboldened after he met his 92-year-old uncle, who had a problem with his eyesight.

UFC Lightweight, Dustin Poirier took notice of what Gorimbo was doing for his people and made a handsome donation of 10k USD to the cause. Gorimbo responded saying, “@DustinPoirier thank you for the donation of a $10000 to the new initiative i am starting in village in Zimbabwe of fixing cataract for old people in my village.It’s going to change a lot of people’s lives.Imagine you can’t see one time and next thing you see clear.”

One can’t help but root for Themba Gorimbo after finding out what the fighter is trying to do. Even more so after everything the UFC welterweight has gone through in his life. Up until winning his first UFC fight, Gorimbo was said to have survived with 7 dollars in his account.

Themba Gorimbo’s life before the UFC

Themba Gorimbo was born in Zimbabwe. Having been born into one of the poorest countries in the world, he would soon lose his parents by the age of 13. By 16, Gorimbo had built a life based around travelling to the local fields to illegally dig for blood diamonds.

In one of the countless situations forced onto him, Gorimbo was bitten by german shepherds to the brink of death after getting caught by the police. He claims that the night changed him as a person, which eventually led him to start his journey as an MMA fighter.

It seems Zimbabwe has found a hero in Themba Gorimbo. The welterweight is set to take on Kiefer Crosbie at UFC fight night: Dolidze vs Imamov on 3rd February 2024.
