MMA fans responded to the news with awe and admiration for Makhachev. Here’s how the fans reacted:

Fans were in awe of the legacy Makhachev is creating.

“Dude is building a legacy far great than Khabib’s. He already has half of Khabib’s title defenses, that’s incredible”

Many also drew comparisons between his career and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“I love how Islam approaches his career compared to Khabib. He takes way more risks & wants a more creative type of career/fight path with the fights he’s looking for. Just fought the best featherweight ever & is now ready to move up and challenge the WW champ, love to see it”

Some fans were left confused by the remarks.

“What’s up w all these contract killer remarks he been making”

While others reiterated his achievements to highlight his impressive career.

“Finished Charles on the ground and finished Volk in the stand up.”

“Islam top 5 all time snapping a 34 combined streak finishing 2 P4P within 2 rounds the greatest sub artist by sub and best striker by KO 🤷🏽♂️ there’s no debate if he goes up and wins and defends a bit he’s the GOAT.”

Fans also made tongue-in-cheek remarks about how it wasn’t really Makhachev making the statements.

“Bro acting like Ali Abdelaziz isn’t on Islam’s phone typing for him”

While others stated that they feel UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards might be too much for Makhachev to handle.

“As someone who barely cares about Leon, Leon beats him”

In conclusion, Makhachev’s readiness to be a backup fighter for the welterweight title bout has garnered respect from fans. But the news about him wanting to be a part of UFC 296 should not come as a surprise. Both Covington and Makhachev have previously stated that they wish to fight each other. And there have already been statements made by both fighters that add another layer of intrigue to this matchup!

Makhachev wants Colby Covington to win at UFC 296 so he can fight him next

In an interview with James Lynch, Covington revealed what he wants to do if he defeats Leon Edwards and claims the welterweight title. He stated, “Islam Makhachev. He’s fighting in a little man’s weight class.” Covington also stated that he thinks Makhachev’s record is “pathetic”. As he then explained that the Dagestani fighter only wins via split decisions and split draws.

Makhachev on the other hand, has stated he wants Covington to win against Edwards. He explained in an interview with ESPN, “I’ve never heard Leon say he wants this fight. But Colby wants it. That’s why I want Colby to win…” The lightweight champion then elaborated that he feels the matchup would be a showcase for “Dagestan wrestling vs U.S. wrestling”. However, he stated that he feels he has an advantage over Covington’s wrestling and striking skills.

Will the proposed matchup indeed take place? That’s anyone’s guess. But fans can be assured of non-stop action if these two fighters step into the Octagon against each other.
