UFC’s welterweight division is currently packed with some of the best fighters. Kamaru Usman, Colby Covington, Gilbert Burns, Leon Edwards, and Jorge Masvidal, to name a few. However, fellow welterweight fighter Khamzat Chimaev has snapped everyone’s attention towards him.
Chimaev’s dominant wins throughout his MMA career have earned him many fans. However, he is also receiving the scorn of a few fighters. Colby Covington is one of them.

Chimaev is ready to fight just about anybody, including Covington. In an interview, Covington revealed his thoughts about a potential fight against the Russian-born fighter.
Covington said, “He needs to be someone like worthy, like someone in the top five. Someone in the top of the rankings, not just fight hand-picked people.”
Covington continued, “And what does he got? Three-four UFC fights? The media loves to rush these kids, you know. And these hype jobs and this is fighting man. People get seriously hurt for rushing people like that.”
“If you guys want to rush a guy and take some time off his life and send him for a hospital trip, then yeah, I am always open for that. I love doing good business and I love doing business for the UFC and it would be an honor to beat whoever they want me to beat and if that’s the name they put in front of me, I can promise you I’m going to train extremely hard… and I’m going to show a new skill set that the world hasn’t seen yet…”
Should Colby Covington fight Khamzat Chimaev?
Covington has been fighting for the UFC since 2014. He fought 9 UFC fights with just one loss before fighting for the title.

Chimaev, however, started fighting for the promotion in 2020 and has been only in four UFC fights. He was dominant in all of his fights, but he has not fought any of the ranked fighters.

Facing fighters from the top 5 or top 10 would surely not be that easy for him. Thus, a few bouts against top welterweight fighters are needed before he can fight for the title.
Covington is one of the top-ranked fighters in the division and hence, his name keeps cropping up. If Chimaev, Covington, and UFC agree to this fight, it would attract tons of attention from the MMA community worldwide.
