Colby Covington faced major disappointment during his fight against Joaquin Buckley at UFC Tampa. The former interim welterweight champion was forced to back off as the cage side doctors stopped the fight in round 3. Well, it was indeed a justifiable decision as ‘New Mansa’ had cut Covington’s face with powerful strikes. One of those caused a laceration on Covington’s eyelid, which, according to him, obscured his vision. Moreover, there was a danger of more damage being done as they were only three rounds into their five-round fight. However, ‘Chaos’ didn’t seem to believe that it was a just decision by the ‘DEI’ doctor.

Not too long after the fight, Covington made a video of him defending his loss. Well, he seemed to believe that he could have actually defeated ‘New Mansa’. He said, “Everybody knows I’m a fourth and fifth-round fighter. I was just getting started in those championship rounds. I could’ve finished him in that 4th or 5th round.” He claimed that Buckley was already breathing heavily and would eventually slow down in the later rounds. Those rounds were where ‘Chaos’ claimed he would dominate the fight.

Covington continued, “I felt I was going to take control of that fight. It was close and competitive. He didn’t outclass me, didn’t drop me, and didn’t really hurt me.” But the cage side doctors were worried as Covington was bleeding profusely. Had the fight continued, a few more hits to his lacerated eyelid could have seen him lose the lid. But the former interim champion chalked his loss down to bad luck. He concluded, “It’s unfortunate that the DEI doctor stopped the fight early.”

Fans bash Colby Covington blaming doctor for his UFC Tampa loss

One fan agreed with Colby Covington about his habit of coming strong in the later rounds of his fights. But UFC Tampa was a different game altogether. The fan claimed that there was no way Covington could have won against Buckley. The comment read, “Colby comes on stronger later in fight but he got his a– beat early and got his a– beat bad, he had no chance of winning any of those rounds imo. He didn’t look good.” Another fan bashed him for blaming the doctor for his loss after she expressed her worries about saving his eyelid. The comment read, “It’s pretty shitty when his gimmick comes down to trashing the doctor who saved his eyelid. Bet she wishes she’d let him keep fighting.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Colby Covington's bravado justified, or is he just making excuses for his UFC Tampa loss?

Have an interesting take?

Some fans wished the fight to have gone a bit longer. But the reason wasn’t the same as the welterweight contender’s. The fan wrote, “I wish it went 5 rounds so I got to watch Colby get pummeled for longer.” Another fan refused to agree that Covington won 1 round. He wrote, “Did Colby even win a round? Because he was getting battered.” Another fan commented, “Colby was genuinely good in his prime, but he wasted it with inactivity and cherry-picking opponents, which is why his resume is so lackluster. I’d have had a lot more respect for Colby if he took all-comers while he was a top contender, even if he lost to them.”

Some fans even claimed that Covington should appear in prelims in future fights. One comment read, “He’s been overrated for a long time. Should be on prelims.” But the fighting community blamed the welterweight’s character as the culprit. A fan wrote, “Basically Colby feels compelled to stay in the stupid character he created. The problem is that character doesn’t work when you lose.” Another fan commented, “He is playing a character and anyone engaging in it is just going to keep him doing it.”

What do you think of Covington’s excuse? Do you believe he could have defeated ‘New Mansa’ with his injuries in 4th or 5th rounds? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
