Amid the uncertainty around his fighting future, Conor McGregor‘s future plans have taken a new, and very surprising turn. It seems like he Irishman, who hasn’t fought for the past four years, and has been teasing a return to the UFC Octagon against Michael Chandler, may be looking to change sports entirely.

The Irishman posted a short clip of a 2023 sumo wrestling match between Ohnosho and Takakeisho on his Instagram Story along with the simple caption “Bucket List”. Well, if he indeed wants to become a sumo wrestler, ‘Mystic Mac’ would have to gain about a hundred to a hundred and fifty pounds of weight, assuming the Irishman walks around in the ballpark of 200 pounds when not in camp.

After all, the elite sumo wrestlers weigh between 350 and 400 pounds, while even lower-level ones weigh at least 300 pounds. Sumo wrestling, of course, is huge in Japan. While the matches last only a few seconds, the sport, whose history goes back over two thousand years, is considered the most elite sport in Japanese culture, which values its traditions immensely.

Two sumo wrestlers enter a circle, and the objective is to make your opponent either touch the ground with their hand or push them out of the circle, which usually takes less than ten seconds. And probably because of how short (and thus action-packed) sumo wrestling matches are, they usually draw huge crowds who give big reactions when something happens.

So it is not surprising to see ‘The Notorious’, who loves a good crowd and being the center of attention, be drawn to the sport. Of course, ‘Mystic Mac’ is clearly joking here and probably has no intentions of actually becoming a sumo wrestler. But then again, many would say that that statement is probably also completely true of his UFC future.

Will Conor McGregor return to the octagon, any sooner?

Conor McGregor’s political run ended before it could even properly start. Earlier this year, the Irishman, of course, had floated the idea that he would run for the President of his native Republic of Ireland. But unfortunately, that idea has run into a wall since McGregor has admitted that he won’t be able to fulfill the stipulations required to get nominated for President.

What’s your perspective on:

Is McGregor's sumo interest a sign he's done with UFC, or just a playful distraction?

Have an interesting take?

The Irish Constitution stipulat4es that anyone running for President either be nominated by twenty Irish Parliamentarians or by a local council. And since ‘Mystic Mac’ is an outsider and running as an anti-establishment insurgent, his political run found no purchase gaming either any of the local councils, or the required number of Parliamentarians.

Which is probably why ‘The Notorious’ floated the idea of having “unfinished business” with Michael Chandler, whom he jerked around for nearly two years before pulling out of their planned UFC 303 clash two weeks from the moment of climax. So what will McGregor do next? Well, we don’t know for sure, but promises of a UFC return would be a good bet. Will he actually come through on those promises?

That remains to be seen, but our (and indeed almost the whole UFC world’s) money would be against it. The man is probably just too rich and too famous to go through another camp, put himself through hell to cut weight, and face a killer hell-bent on severing from his consciousness. Which is why most think ‘Mystic Mac’s chances of coming back to the UFC are as good or as bad as him becoming a sumo wrestler. What do you think about Conor McGregor’s thoughts on sumo wrestling?
