Conor McGregor recently mentioned that he was going to make his return as a middleweight. This made him the second big UFC star to set an eye on the division in the last year. Undefeated UFC sensation Khamzat Chimaev had already made the move back to 185 pounds for UFC 294. In a surprise move, McGregor appeared to be in support of ‘Borz’s decision to go up in the weight class in a message on social media.

‘The Notorious’ has taken shots at multiple fighters, and Khamzat Chimaev is one of them. McGregor once took a jibe at ‘Borz’ by making fun of his physical features, particularly his scarred lip. He went on to call Chimaev “rat-lip” in a now-deleted Twitter (X) post. But McGregor showed great excitement for the Emirati fighter when he made his middleweight move. Let’s see what Conor McGregor had to say.

When Conor McGregor welcomed Khamzat Chimaev’s middleweight move

The former UFC double champion was excited to see Khamzat Chimaev fight at 185 pounds because he thought that was the most fitting weight class for the undefeated star. Nevertheless, McGregor insisted that ‘Borz’ choose bigger opponents since Kamaru Usman was not a traditional middleweight fighter, but he did not count ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ out. Conor McGregor said, “A much better fighter at 185. But he must face bigger opponents now, albeit not this fighter he faces a 170 on a steep skid.”

The Irishman claimed that fighting a declining Kamaru Usman who was also on a losing skid was not the ideal choice for Khamzat Chimaev to prove himself. Conor McGregor also expressed his desire to see how his middleweight journey turns out to be. “But he himself gets to weigh the bigger weight. A perfect fight for the Chechen. I am excited to see this story unfold,” said Conor McGregor. Even though the former double champion spoke in a positive light about Chimaev, ‘Borz’ still appears to have a little bit of beef with McGregor. Chimaev recently opened up on the consequences of a fight between him and ‘The Notorious’.

A video clip of one of Khamzat Chimaev’s recent interviews had him predicting a fight against Conor McGregor. The Emirati fighter pointed out the obvious difference in size between the two fighters, claiming that he was bigger than the Irishman. Chimaev said, “Of course, the guy [McGregor] is 66 kilos. I am 84 kilos and I’m much bigger than him.”

In a realistic way, Khamzat Chimaev doesn’t think he will ever lock horns with Conor McGregor. However, if they do manage to cross paths, ‘Borz’ claimed that it would end badly for the former champion. “I don’t think ever will happen, our fight. If it happens, of course, I’m gonna smash that guy,” Chimaev added.
