Dustin Poirier has built an incredible legacy in the UFC, with 31 fights under the promotion and only eight losses in his career. While ‘The Diamond’ has primarily fallen short against elite competition, he is remembered for his performance against none other than Conor McGregor. Their first encounter at UFC 178 in 2014 was filled with tension, as ‘The Notorious’ did everything possible to get inside Poirier’s head. Unfortunately for the Louisiana native, he let the mental warfare affect him, and McGregor capitalized, finishing him with a first-round knockout.
However, at UFC 257 ‘The Diamond’ shocked the world by dismantling McGregor with vicious leg kicks and a flurry of punches, securing a second-round TKO victory. This time, it was McGregor who struggled to adapt. The trilogy fight at UFC 264 later that year was supposed to settle the score. However, the fight ended in dramatic fashion when McGregor suffered a gruesome leg break at the end of the first round. While Poirier was awarded the victory, the unresolved nature of the fight left the door open for continued animosity.
So what exactly turned things in favor of Poirier? The former interim champion shared his thoughts while speaking on the Outta Pocket Podcast. Poirier feels McGregor’s out-of-the-world success might just have led to his downfall in his MMA career. He said, “The money he made after he fought Floyd you know. Made a 100 million bucks fighting Floyd. Then came back defending belts, making really good money. He got rich, started his business. Sold it for a couple hundred million. Like Marvin Haggler it’s hard to wake up and run those miles when you sleep in silk sheets.”

The former interim lightweight champion then tipped his hat to fighters like Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov, who made their millions while competing in the UFC. Of course, they never got a $100 million payday, but they managed to evolve themselves by being active as competitors. Poirier, too, for that matter made millions fighting while remaining at the top of the division for the latter part of his career.

He shed some details about his last fight during an interview with MMA Fighting. Poirier said, “It’s summer. July or August, probably,”. The former interim champion further added, “And we’re working on UFC New Orleans. I’m trying to retire in my home state. The UFC hasn’t been there since maybe 2015. I fought on the card, I fought Yancy Medeiros but that was the last time I got to fight at home. So, to retire where it all started in Louisiana would be incredible for me in my career.”
