Conor McGregor is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars ever created by the UFC. McGregor is well-reputed among MMA fans for his gruesome left-hand strikes. He has also managed to shut the lights off his opponents many times in the first round itself. ‘Mystic Mac’ is also a brutal trash talker on the mic and even gets the pre-fight press conferences to come alive.

McGregor has achieved an awesome feat in the UFC, which very few have been able to achieve. He is a former two-weight division champion of the UFC. But, with ‘Mystic Mac’ out of the Octagon for more than a year now, the championships have changed hands multiple times. McGregor still thinks the two championships to be his. He recently took to Twitter and mocked the current holders of the lightweight and the featherweight championships.

Islam Makhachev is the current lightweight champion and the featherweight belt of the UFC is currently held by Alexander Volkanovski. McGregor took shots at both through a single tweet.

Conor McGregor derided the champions

McGregor uploaded a collage of the two champions with their championships. His tweet was captioned, “My two old belts. On two little ticks. This fight does 10 buys”

‘The Notorious One’ also tweeted a few controversial statements after Islam Makhachev’s win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 crowning him the new lightweight champion. He went on to mock Makhachev’s mentor and his bitter rival, Khabib Nurmagomedov, labeling him as a “fat mouth”.

Makhachev’s post-fight interview in UFC 280 ended with Nurmagomedov planning out his next fight with the featherweight champion. ‘The Great’ also made his way inside the Octagon for a non-violent face-off with Makhachev and congratulated him on his win.

McGregor predicted Makhachev vs Volkanovski to be a flop show

In Islam Makhachev’s post-fight press conference, Nurmagomedov said that their next target would be to fight ‘The Great’ Volkanovski in his home country of Australia. ‘The Great’ also accepted Makhachev and Nurmagomedov’s challenge after making his way inside the Octagon. The roaring response from the audience made it somewhat clear the next ‘big money’ fight would probably be Makhachev vs Volkanovski.

However, the Irishman had his own predictions about this fight. He said, “This fight does 10 buys” deriding the marketing ability of both Makhachev and Volkanovski. McGregor thought that he was a lot superior in terms of selling fights to the audiences.

The Makhachev vs Volkanovski fight is probably going to be a two-weight division championship fight. The winner will be crowned a two-weight division champion, just like McGregor was back in the day. It also may be the case that McGregor is trying to feud with the possible future two-weight champion so that he can get a title shot right upon his return to the UFC.

Or do you think this tweet was just due to McGregor’s ‘superior-to-all’ attitude?

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
