There is finally light at the end of the tunnel for Michael Chandler. The former Bellator champion, who has been waiting to fight Conor McGregor for more than one year after their contentious appearance in last year’s season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, may finally be close to fighting ‘Notorious’.

While they were slated to fight each other at the end of last year, the bout was postponed and has been in limbo ever since, until very recently. Chandler joined TMZ Sports for an interview and discussed his upcoming fight with Conor McGregor.

Conor McGregor announced that he would be fighting Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29 in a 185-pound middleweight bout. However, UFC CEO Dana White did not lend credence to the prospect.

Surprised by this, the Irishman admitted that he had started to “drift-off” since he had not been hearing from the UFC. McGregor expressed frustration at the lack of development from the promotion’s end to set up the fight. Days later, however, the former two-division champion announced that he had successfully gotten a date. He claimed he would be fighting Chandler in the summer.

No one was happier to hear this than Chandler, who predicted that “we’re gonna collide this summer.” On being asked if he had any clarity about the weight class at which they would be fighting, ‘Iron’ admitted it was still not clear.

“Don’t we love to just keep it all up in the air, right, you know. We’re talking 185 we’re talking 170, you know. Doesn’t seem we’re talking 155, but 185 or 170 and obviously I’ve been vocal (about wanting to fight at 170),” he said.

Speculation in recent weeks suggested that the UFC would end the 170-pound welterweight division. The promotion then would introduce a new 165-pound division and have McGregor fight for its inaugural title. However, given Chandler’s preference for 170 pounds, this seems extremely unlikely now.

Chandler not worried about weight class for McGregor fight

Michael Chandler felt that the weight class at which they would fight was irrelevant since he and Conor McGregor weighed within a few pounds of each other. The duo had also spent the majority of their careers fighting at the same divisions. Chandler reiterated that he was an “any guy, anytime, any place, any weight” kind of guy and was determined to win against McGregor.

“It doesn’t matter Conor and I are about the same size. At all times we fought in the same weight class our entire life, so it doesn’t matter what the weight class is. All that matters is…I’m gonna go out there and take his head off and get my hand raised,” he added. What do you think about Chandler’s comments about his upcoming fight against Conor McGregor?
