The UFC’s adored superstar, Conor McGregor, was expected to make an appearance in the octagon sometime this year. Fans expected to see him perhaps this summer or early autumn, but the odds for this are now fading.
The Irishman’s recuperation seemed to be progressing well, and he appeared to be recovering faster than predicted. However, it no longer appears to be the case, from recent reports. ‘The Notorious’ might not return to fighting until the start of next year.
In a recent episode of the MMA Hour, renowned MMA reporter Ariel Helwani confirmed that McGregor’s return will be next year. He said, “last I heard, by the way, Conor could come back in February, March or so. It doesn’t look like he’s coming back in 2022… The last I heard was early 2023. There’s no rush here, as there shouldn’t be a rush because he’s coming back from such a gruesome and serious injury.”

There have been rumors that McGregor would take on Chandler this year. But fans can rather expect a showdown between Jorge Masvidal and Conor McGregor on his return. Masvidal’s ATT coach also proposed the bout, saying, “it would make sense“. Helwani agreed with coach James Brown and stated that it was the fight to make for the UFC.
“I have said that this was the fight to make, honestly, till Masvidal lost to Colby… Name me another one that makes sense. In terms of star power in terms of where they’re at in their career. Of course, you can mention chandler, but it doesn’t seem like Conor wants to fight at 155,” claimed Helwani.
“Masvidal is on a losing streak, Conor is on a losing streak. Big-time fight. Any venue, sells it out. Any pay per view, massive deal. it just feels like the fight,” he added.

Conor McGregor on his injury situation
After McGregor broke his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, McGregor has taken time away to heal from his horrible injury. In a recent interview with SkySports, McGregor gave fans an update on the situation with his leg, and his possible return to action.
McGregor said, “the body is doing good. We are going to up the training bit by bit. I have another CT scan in the coming days and then I will be clear to kick. Once I can kick and grapple, I will be back in no time. Boxing training is going well, strength training. I am excited to get back.”
