Crime never pays, as the old saying goes. While ‘never’ might be too strong a word, it is safe to say that a crime that you film yourself committing and put on the internet will most definitely get you thrown in jail.

Joe Rogan was joined by his friend and comedian, Duncan Trussell, on episode 2009 of the JRE podcast to discuss such an incident. During the course of discussions, the incident of Youtuber and former Olympian Trevor Jacob deliberately crashing a plane for views came up.

Joe Rogan appalled at Youtuber for crashing plane on purpose

Jacob filmed a video of him flying a plane to, purportedly, spread his deceased friend’s ashes on top of a mountain. He had installed cameras in the cabin of the plane. During the flight, he ejected from the plane and deployed a parachute, safely landing on the ground.

Jacob “did not intend to reach his destination but instead planned to eject from his aircraft during the flight and video himself parachuting to the ground and his airplane as it descended and crashed”, the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said.

Jacob, who has represented the US at the Winter Olympics, has pleaded guilty to one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a Federal investigation.

Rogan was disgusted by the incident, pointing out that the plane could’ve killed someone. “Did you hear about that one guy that crashed his plane on purpose for YouTube views? Like he jumped out of the plane, like let it f***ing crash, for views. Imagine you’re hiking with your family  (thinking) this is amazing, beautiful mountains, and you get hit in the face by a plane.”

Jacob may be facing up to twenty years in prison. And, incurred the wrath of the aviation community as well as the general public.

Fans react to the incident

Fans had a lot to say about the affair, with unanimous disgust and revulsion for the pilot. Here’s a snapshot of the general opinion among fans on Youtube:

  • “And that’s why social media is the worst thing to happen to us. It creates a society of selfishness and instant gratification.”
  • “He also started off the video saying he was going to fly up into the mountains to spread his friends ashes. Using that as the excuse to execute this purposeful plane crash just shows how much of a psychopath he is”
  • “Filming yourself committing crimes is never the smart way to go”
  • “This fool should be facing every criminal charge possible.”
  • “Its hard to believe that the plan to crash the plane didnt work out. I guess it just goes to show, you never know how things will pan out.”
  • “Joe was more broken up about destroying the plane more than his make believe hiking family taking it to the face😂😂”

  • “Not only could it have hit someone. It could have started a massive wildfire”
  • “I was following this from the day Trevor Jacob posted that video. Was pretty great to see the flying community ban together to call out the idiot. Crazy that he went from Olympian to pos”
  • “Usually the suspect would only get a couple years for something like this ,but I think it’s so unique and involves social media ,so they’ll probably try to make an example out of him.”
