During a recent podcast episode of “Weighing In” with Josh Thomson and Big John McCarthy, the two discussed the topic of how Conor McGregor’s return would be amplified with the addition of a new weight class and title. However, as per his sources, the veteran UFC official doesn’t seem to believe that a new division would be the case for UFC 303.
On the topic of a new division being formed, McCarthy stated, “I recently had a conversation with a person that is a well-known employee of the UFC and stuff. I got nothing as far as this being a title fight but it definitely could be and if you if you’re the UFC and you’re going to do this, really it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if you put it as the fight with Chandler and Conor and it makes sense because they do better with Conor being a champion. Just be honest, they do better. So it’s a business. And so why not say well, you know, right now we don’t have that weight class.”

Cormier in the YouTube video stated, “If you do 165, it has to be Conor. You’re introducing a new weight class. It has to mean something. You can’t have two normal fighters introducing the weight. I just think that right now you can’t do it. You can’t do it now because it would feel like you’re doing it specifically for, or to appease, Conor McGregor.”
