Is Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler happening? That’s been bugging fans for a while, and amidst that, ‘Iron’ came out to claim that he’s been offered a title shot since the fight against ‘The Notorious’ is under clouds of uncertainty. However, Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier is finding it hard to buy what Chandler’s selling about his claims about a showdown against Islam Makhachev.

When the reigning lightweight champion got word about Michael Chandler getting handed a title shot, he straight away called him “unreliable.” But why? Well, Islam Makhachev believes that even if he agrees to fight ‘Iron’, he’s going to change lanes as soon as Conor McGregor comes back into the fold, and for some reason, Daniel Cormier believes that’s the route the Dana White has decided for Chandler.

Daniel Cormier claims Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler is what Dana White wants

Given that Michael Chandler hasn’t done anything noteworthy to deserve a title compared to the other surging contenders in the lightweight division, Daniel Cormier dismissed the High Ridge native’s claims. He believes the only reason ‘Iron’ had decided to make this two-year-long wait was because the fight with Conor McGregor is still a confirmed plan despite the setbacks that have occurred. Following what Dana White and Co. want could be the big difference for Chandler to get the title shot that he claims he has right now because White will remember his loyalty.

“All this waiting that we have seen Michael Chandler do is not his doing. He is waiting because the organization wants him to wait. The organization wants that to be the fight. That’s the only way he would get a title fight,” Daniel Cormier stated on the ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ show. “Under these circumstances, he’s doing a solid for the company. He’s waiting, he’s not fighting anybody else, he’s taking his time to try to keep that massive fight together so they go. ‘Okay, that fight’s not happening, we will reward you,'” he added.

Moreover, to believe that a title shot was on the table for Michael Chandler would be foolish, according to Daniel Cormier. The reason behind that is his record and the way he lost his last fight. Since joining the UFC in 2021, he’s only won two out of his five fights and he has been finished twice, once by Charles Oliveira and once by Dustin Poirier. Hence, Cormier believes there’s hardly any logical option for him in the UFC other than to take the fight against Conor McGregor.

“The best option for Michael Chandler is Conor McGregor. There aren’t really many other options to get him a fight. It’s going to be Conor McGregor,” Daniel Cormier added. Meanwhile, Conor McGregor recently responded to a tweet from Michael Chandler about Donald Trump’s recent shooting incident and surprisingly claimed that he has a date in hand for their fight. Unfortunately, it turns out that it’s not true.

“I talked to Dana today about our new date, all looking good! 24’ for sure,” tweeted Conor McGregor, putting not only Michael Chandler at ease but the fans as well. However, Dana White recently shared his take on this claim by the Irishman and appeared to dismiss that there is a decided date for McGregor’s comeback while also claiming that they do they have any plan mapped out.

“Yeah, that’s the fight that needs to happen. We’ve been waiting for it, and it’s an awesome fight. A fun fight. As of sitting here right here, right now, no I don’t have a date for it, a plan, or anything like that,” Dana White revealed on the ‘Pat McAfee Show’. Nevertheless, the UFC CEO did mention that the plan they have is to try to make this fight happen in 2024 itself.
