The main event for UFC’s first Saudi event has been dubbed as a title contender match between Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev. However, fight plans can change anytime, and ‘The Reaper’ weighed in on that situation. The former middleweight champion recently issued a demand to Dana White and the UFC matchmakers that the winner of the Saudi main event has to get the title shot no matter what.

Robert Whittaker bounced back from his loss against Dricus du Plessis at UFC 290 to beat Paulo Costa at UFC 298. He has now been pitted against the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev in a revised card for the June 22 event in Saudi Arabia, after Dana White failed to impress the Saud officials with his initial fight card. Given that the fight has title implications, Whittaker is already preparing for what will come next.

During a recent appearance on the ‘Submission Radio‘ podcast, Robert Whittaker shared his honest thoughts about the outcome of the Khamzat Chimaev fight. The former champion believes that he will beat the Emirati star and claims that the UFC does not have any credible contender to fight for the title than the winner of his fight against ‘Borz’.

“Pretty clear cut from me if you look at the way things line up. Obviously, you heard Dana speak about it online that this was a number one contender shot. I beat Khamzat, I get a title shot. There’s no other possibility,” said Robert Whittaker. The Australian star also drew his attention to Sean Strickland, who is yet to get his rematch after losing the champion at UFC 297.

Robert Whittaker doesn’t think that Dana White would be too keen on giving Sean Strickland a title shot, since he is yet to compete in a match following his loss to Dricus du Plessis. I don’t think Sean [Strickland] will be rewarded by sitting on the sidelines. I don’t think… the UFC don’t really like playing [that way],” Whittaker added. However, ‘The Reaper’ also made an admission about being powerless with what the UFC plans to do. Let’s have a look at that front.

UFC can do whatever they want

We have seen time and time again that Dana White and the UFC officials often like to do things the way they like. Hence, Robert Whittaker believes that they can decide to switch plans and not give him a title shot, even though his upcoming fight is billed to be a title contender match. The former champion further stated, At the end of the day, they can do whatever they want. These [his thoughts on probable fights] are all just hypotheticals.”

Nevertheless, ‘The Reaper’ is not focused on what Dana White plans to do after his fight against Khamzat Chimaev. He claims to be passionate about fighting and that is what he’s preparing with less than three months left for the event in Saudi Arabia. I’m going there to fight Khamzat because that’s my job. That’s what I enjoy doing,” Whittaker added.

Some sources claim that Dricus du Plessis could be defending his title against Israel Adesanya while Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev would fight for the number one contender’s spot. It will be interesting to see how things shape in the middleweight division in the months to come.
