“Hello Jon..I just know that I can beat you in a fight,” interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall sent a message to Jon Jones after his UFC 304 win. Ever since, the Manchester native has been waiting for the big-time clash against the consensus greatest of all time, but in doing so, he’s become quite inactive and has yet to fight in 2025. But who’s to blame for that? Well, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier has answered that question for the fans.
Dana White appeared very ecstatic after the reception from the crowd Aspinall received when he called out Jones in Manchester. Later, he expressed immediate interest in materializing that fight. “It’s probably the biggest fight in heavyweight history and it’s a massive fight in the history of the company, too,” said the 55-year-old last December. So why hasn’t he made it official? Aspinall is currently in the prime of his career, after all, and needs to be more active as the interim title holder, according to Cormier.
Claiming that White has been unfair with the fans, the former double champ said, “Jon’s always been the guy [to beat], and he’s the heavyweight champ now. And this young guy [Tom Aspinall]… In the time that he’s been waiting now for this Jon Jones fight, he could have fought two more times,” on the ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ Show. “And we could be talking about Tom Aspinall as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. That’s where we’re getting cheated as fans.”

Meanwhile, Cormier, who has been the fiercest rival of Jon Jones, appeared to back the undisputed heavyweight champion on this one. He understands the position that ‘Bones’ is right, and given that he’s one of the absolute top stars in the promotion, he might as well be able to pick and choose when he wants to fight. Cormier even likened Jones’ current status to that of Roman Reigns and John Cena in the WWE. But for Aspinall, he needs to get a move on. Much like Georges St-Pierre, who believes chasing fights like the one against Jon Jones is just another distraction for the Briton, ‘DC’ echoed the same sentiment.
“That’s where the sport is getting cheated because we aren’t seeing Aspinall fight. Sure, Jon Jones can be a special attraction,” Daniel Cormier added. “Jon Jones is on the part-time schedule like Roman Reigns, like John Cena. He comes in, it’s a big deal, but we need that guy that carries that championship every week, and we’re not getting that because Tom Aspinall was so worried about fighting Jones.”

Dana White addressed rumors about Tom Aspinall defending the interim title again
So, the rumor had it that Tom Aspinall would be defending his title against the man who was defeated by Jones to become the undisputed champion, Ciryl Gane. The Frenchman bounced back after his UFC 285 loss with two wins on the trot, and since the heavyweight title picture has been at a standstill, speculations claim that maybe he’s going to fight for the interim belt once again.

However, White would reveal during last weekend’s Fight Night’s post-fight presser that the news is nothing but “bulls–t.” And the good news was that the UFC CEO was still fixated on making the Jones vs. Aspinall fight happen. “I’ve said since Day 1 that this would be the biggest heavyweight fight in the history of the company and the history of the sport. This will be a big one.”

Meanwhile, he insisted that the journalists pay more attention to what’s happening and only take the UFC as the real source for such information regarding fights, since there are a lot of rumors and wrong information available on the internet. “Everything you hear is bulls–t until we say it,” said Dana White.
