Muhammad Mokaev defeated Alex Perez via a unanimous decision at their UFC Fight Night 238 clash. Already well on their way to fighting for title, the recent turbulence in the flyweight division, along with champion Alexandre Pantoja having defeated the top-ranked flyweights more than once had paved the way for the winner of this fight to be a virtual no. one title contender.

The undefeated Mokaev was the favorite coming into the fight and notched up his twelfth win in a somewhat underwhelming fight. Their bout was a largely uneventful one, with Perez’s excellent takedown defense frustrating most of Mokaev’s attempts to take him to the ground being the theme.

The first round belonged to Mokaev, whose initial takeown attempts were expertly stuffed by Perez. However, by the end of the round, the undefeated flyweight was able to get his opponent down and proceeded to ground-and-pound him, finishing the round strong.

The second round was a largely uneventful one saw Perez catch Mokaev with a hard left, which wobbled him and caused him to shoot for another single leg takedown. In the third round, Mokaev persisted with his takedown attempts, which Perez kept successfully prevented, showing excellent wrestling skills throughout the bout.

On the feet, Mokaev fared better and managed to outstrike his opponent, earning him a unanimous 29-28 victory on all three judges’ scorecards. After the fight, Mokaev, who had spoken about fighting for the title after defeating Perez, called on Dana White and the UFC to have him fight flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja,, who will reportedly be defending his title at UFC 301, next.
